Architecture students host art auction

On Friday night, University of New Mexico students and members of the community gathered for drinks and cheer at the third annual student art auction, hosted by the UNM chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS).The event was from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in George Pearl Hall and featured 48 art items including works from students, faculty and other professionals. According to one of the coordinators for the auction Magdalena Kerkmans, a senior architecture student the money from the auction will primarily fund the students trip to the AIAS national forum in Seattle, WA that is being held from Dec. 29, 2018 to Jan. 1, 2019. “This is our biggest fundraiser,” said Kerkmans. “The auction will help (AIAS) pay for hotels and registration.”

ASUNM creates packages for homeless students

The Associated Students of the University of New Mexico put together hygiene packages for students and individuals struggling with housing and food insecurity. The effort was spearheaded by the ASUNM community service agency, Community Experience. With help from volunteers, they assembled the packets together on Oct. 23.

Column: Racist Halloween costumes are never okay

The controversy over the offensive nature of certain Halloween costumes has been revisited once again this year. NBC canceled Megyn Kelly’s show for comments she made about blackface as a Halloween costume. On her show “Megyn Kelly Today,” Kelly posed the question to her show’s all-white panel on the topic of ‘blackface,’ and asked, “What is racist about that?” The next day she apologized for the comments. “What is racist? You do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface for Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid, that was okay as long as you were dressing up as a character,” Kelly said.

CNM to host Blockchain event in Albuquerque

BlockFiesta!, Albuquerque’s first ever blockchain conference, is a Central New Mexico co-sponsored event taking place on Saturday Oct. 13. Blockchain is an online, decentralized, ledger of transactions associated largely with cryptocurrencies. Essentially, it is a growing list of records using cryptography. Bill Halverson is the senior technology advisor for CNM Ingenuity, which is hosting the event. He defines it as a world wide ledger that can be verified by everyone.

Albuquerque rallies for sustainability during protest

Albuquerque rallied together Sept. 8 for the Rise at the Rio for Climate, Water, Jobs and Justice demonstration calling for renewable energy and environmental justice. The event was part of a larger, international coalition called The People's Climate Movement. Demonstrations in cities all over the world have been held as a part of this movement.

Air Force grants nearly $7 million to UNM

Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) granted $6.7 million to University of New Mexico sectors for STEM research, with a focus on the development of spacecraft technologies and commercial applications from the research. Matthew Fetrow, the director of AFRL tech management, said that the money is part of a five year grant to improve community outreach to STEM fields, increase economic and workforce development and connect AFRL technologies with students. The principle UNM educator working with AFRL is electrical and computer engineer professor, Rafael Fierro. He said the lab facility for the research is “populated with robots, computers and 3D printers.”
