Grad Issue: Sabrina Romero overcomes homesickness, financial troubles and other challenges

In many ways, Sabrina Romero represents the struggle of every rural student at a large university. However, it is the way she overcame these challenges that makes her impact significant and her experiences unique. Romero grew up in Clovis, New Mexico, where she developed a close relationship with her mother and her little brother. After graduating from Clovis High School, Romero was eager seek the city lifestyle and broaden her experiences by attending UNM to pursue a degree in business administration.

Anderson School of Management to host Special Olympics run

In collaboration with the Anderson School of Management, Special Olympics New Mexico will host the annual Santa Shuffle 5K & Elf Scoot 1K. Participants will convene at the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum on Dec. 2 at 9 a.m. to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics New Mexico. “This will be our second year organizing the event, and we hope to see more people,” said Arlene Armijo, a Special Olympics New Mexico representative. “We hope the run will help us raise awareness of Special Olympics New Mexico.”

Students build devices for patients facing strokes, trauma, other injuries

In the coming months, University of New Mexico graduate students will have the opportunity to compete in UNM’s biodesign program, which builds new devices for patients suffering from strokes, trauma and other injuries. The biodesign program was initiated by the UNM Health Sciences Center Clinical Translational and Science Center in partnership with the UNM School of Engineering. The program involves a competitive process that combines interdisciplinary teams of faculty members and graduate students from the UNM HSC and the UNM School of Engineering. The program focuses on a different theme each year to address unique medical issues.

How to avoid the flu this season

Flu season is here, and a highly populated university can leave students vulnerable to catching catching influenza. One of the most important steps to treating the flu is being able to identify flu-like symptoms. The respiratory illness usually begins with a fever, sore throat and cough. Symptoms also include headaches, body aches, fatigue and fevers reaching 103 degrees, said Lisa Leahigh, a registered nurse at the University of New Mexico Student Health & Counseling. Flu symptoms are associated with their longevity. The flu can vary in its intensity and length depending on the person’s level of health and treatment options. However, even after the main symptoms of the flu have passed, many people can still suffer from lingering symptoms.

Seinfeld directors visit UNM

This week, the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico hosted a town hall at Rodey Theatre with Emmy award-winning directors Tom Cherones and Tom Azzari, who helped make “Seinfeld” one of the best loved sitcoms of all time. Cherones is a Class of ’61 UNM alum, who studied journalism with a focus in photography. He described his initial exposure to photography at UNM as a formative element in developing his directing style. “I was a photographer for so many years at UNM, so I had a good sense of stage when I started working professionally,” Cherones said. “My style of shooting came from my photography experience and was a great influence for me. The experiences here at this University greatly solidified my interest in TV directing.”
