Milkweed and Monarchs

Tatia Veltkamp, owner of Wings of Enchantment, has a home filled to the brim with butterflies — whether it’s decorations on the walls or breeding monarchs fluttering in their mesh enclosure.  Wings of Enchantment is a butterfly farm in northeast Albuquerque that ships butterflies to consumers across the country. What once started out as a hobby 18 years ago, has grown into a business of Veltkamp farming butterflies for the last nine years.  Her customers purchase the butterflies to release them at weddings and other events. After release, it is expected that the monarchs migrate with the Eastern population “When my kids were little, I read an article in a magazine about how to go find caterpillars and eggs, but I didn’t know what milkweed was, so we had to figure out what milkweed was first in order to go find them,” Veltkamp said.

UNM licences Adobe Creative Cloud

The University of New Mexico has announced the school secured a licensing agreement with Adobe Creative Cloud.   The Budget Leadership Team had a plan approved by the Board of Regents last week. The plan includes a $50 technology fee for both undergraduate and graduate students to pay for the agreement.

Zimmerman prepares to move large amounts of books offsite

Students at the University of New Mexico may have noticed flagged, stacks of books indicating the early stages of the University's process of moving books from Zimmerman Library to the South Campus Repository.  Over the next three years UNM's Libraries will be relocating a chunk of their resources to the future South Campus Repository (SCR), a climate-controlled library facility on South Campus.  UNM currently adds more than 20,000 physical resources to its libraries each year.

UNM readies for Fiestas

This Saturday, Johnson field will be transformed into a gated performance space that will play host to DJ, Ookay and Boogie for Fiestas 2019. Every year the Associated Students of New Mexico Student Special Events (SSE) puts on Fiestas, an annual music festival held at the University of New Mexico. The festival starts at noon and will be lighting up the faces of attendees until around 9 p.m. 

Taking Back Sunday to tour in Albuquerque

First formed by guitarist, Eddie Reyes in 1999, Adam Lazzara, John Nolan, Shaun Cooper and Mark O'Connell of Taking Back Sunday are celebrating their 20-year anniversary as a band with a nation-wide tour. The band is stopping at Albuquerque's Sunshine Theater on April 3 to celebrate with their Albuquerque fans. 20 years ago, when the band first connected, they weren't signed to a record label and were just breaking into the scene, something that guitarist and co-lead vocalist, John Nolan, said he looked at as a step toward to a career playing music. "Realistically at that point I figured it wouldn't last that long, and hopefully though, it would lead to the next thing that would take me further," Nolan said. 

Adam Biederwolf's five favorite albums

As the election for president of the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico gets closer, the Daily Lobo wanted to get to know presidential candidate Adam Biederwolf, and his taste in music a little bit better.  Biederwolf said music plays a huge role in his life and considers himself a fan of Hip Hop. He said he is drawn to the conceptual side of the genre, naming artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z and Kanye West as some of his favorites. This was reflected in his answers when asked what his five favorite albums are, and why.

New music to check out this week

Music in 2019 has seen plenty of new and familiar faces challenging the norms that genre conventions can bring. Here's a list of some of those trailblazing artists and the new material they have released. “I” by Lil Skies Kimetrius Foose, more popularly known as Lil Skies released his debut album, and first project of 2019, late last month. Shelby, named after his mother, opens up with “I” as Skies delivers a reminiscent punch, drawing on the pain and struggle that his last relationship left him with. The track is produced by CuBeatz, Otx Hello and Danny Wolf and the visual was dreamt up by music video master, Cole Bennett of Lyrical Lemonade. 

El Centro de la Raza celebrates 50th birthday

Since its founding in 1969, El Centro de la Raza has helped Latino and underrepresented students at the University of New Mexico. This year El Centro is celebrating their 50th anniversary, titled50 Años de Excelencia y Justicia Social.  The celebration acts as more of a family reunion, said El Centro's Director, Rosa Isela Cervantes.  "We have students coming, (as well as) alumni that haven't seen each other in years," Cervantes said.  As El Centro comes up on 50 years at UNM, they wanted to celebrate the milestone in a way that would allow them to continue to support students the way El Centro always has. El Centro provides resources to students, helping them to reach their fullest potential during their years at UNM.

Hello Kitty Cafe Truck comes to Albuquerque

This Saturday, the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck will be rolling into Albuquerque and settling in the courtyard of ABQ Uptown. The pink pickup will be parked in the courtyard near California Pizza Kitchen from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  As part of Sanrio’s debut food related project, the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck made its first trip around the U.S. in 2014. The truck has traveled to more than 80 locations since its debut, and Albuquerque is next on the list. This year Sanrio added 25 locations to their 2019 tour.
