Bush pitches private accounts to NM

President Bush assured seniors Tuesday that under his proposed reform, they will continue to receive their Social Security checks. Nearly 1,500 New Mexicans attended the invite-only morning panel discussion about Social Security changes at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Libraries slashing journal orders

University Libraries will cut nearly $700,000 worth of subscriptions to academic journals next year. Those planning to cancel journal subscriptions include Zimmerman, Centennial, Fine Arts and Parish Business libraries. "It will hurt," said Linda Lewis, University Libraries professor.

Peace organizations and the mayor of Albuquerque are working together to revise the city's free expression ordinance. "Public demonstrations are a way of voicing an opinion and telling others how you feel about a particular issue," said Aimee Schaefer, president of the League of Democratic Action.

Fair hears mayor's protest policy

Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez introduced a proposed set of guidelines for peaceful protesting at UNM's first Peace Fair on Tuesday. In an interview Tuesday night, Chavez said Albuquerque's Free Expression Ordinance recognizes the differences between spontaneous and organized forms of expression.

Speaker debunks racial stereotypes

In 2003, Darius Lee Smith created a curriculum to dismantle the myths of American Indians as sports mascots, cartoon figures and dead fables. His curriculum has changed the way American-Indian history is taught in Denver Public Schools, he said. Smith, the director of Indian Education for Denver Public Schools, presented an hour-long lecture on Monday, discussing what he called diversity redefined from an indigenous people's perspective.

Greeks stage fund-raiser

Sororities and fraternities put on a show Friday night to raise money for charity. "It's so much fun, and all of the money raised goes to charity," said freshman Mahealani Luafalemana who attended Greek Sing at the SUB. Members from fraternities and sororities participated in the show to raise money for All Faiths Receiving Home, a multiservice, nonprofit agency that serves abused and neglected children and their families in New Mexico.

Degrees honor top citizens

Gov. Bill Richardson, author Tony Hillerman and artist Georgia O'Keefe have one thing in common. They all have honorary degrees from the UNM "They're awarded to individuals who have had a lifetime of extraordinary accomplishments," said Claudia Isaac, associate professor of Community and Regional Planning.

Measure protects sober drivers

Legislation to exempt designated drivers from legal liability when driving uninsured vehicles passed unanimously in the New Mexico House of Representatives. The measure, which passed Feb. 14, was introduced by Rep. Jane Powdrell-Culbert and offers legal protection for anyone driving an uninsured vehicle with the purpose of safely transporting an intoxicated or drug-impaired person home.

Religious groups unite to raise aid

Muslim, Christian and Jewish student organizations sponsored a two-week fund-raiser for survivors of the Dec. 26 tsunami. "I think it's pretty significant," Laura Marquis, vice president of the Intervarsity and American Indian Christian Fellowship said. "We have our differences, but we can unite for a common cause.

Textbook prices soar, study says

A report released this month said textbook companies are needlessly raising the prices of textbooks. "Publishing companies are profiting at the expense of students," said Nick Rugen, New Mexico PIRG campus organizer. Last year, the State Public Interest Research Groups released a report documenting the increasing price of college textbooks.
