Band wallows in stale depression

Even the somber likes of Morrissey and AFI have some competition in the music-to-sit-alone-and-drink-to category from Let There be Morning, the latest record from The Perishers. Although just as passionate, the band doesn't come close to its angst brethren in terms of talent or style.

Characters animate archaic language

Fairies and forlorn lovers will move across Rodey Theatre's stage this weekend. Diane Schulz, the director of the UNM's production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," said the play is full of linguistic style that is not as intimidating as your high school English teacher made it seem.

'Final Fantasy' score summoned to reality

For the gamers who have played "Final Fantasy" for 14 hours straight in the basement with nothing but a two-liter bottle of Mountain Dew and the sheer will to roleplay another hour, the dream has become a reality. Video games, "Final Fantasy" in particular, are permeating mass consciousness.

Apathetic remakes in familiar territory

Michael BublÇ's name appears in only one of the track credits on his latest CD, It's Time. Such a discovery makes it easier to understand why BublÇ seems to have a less-than-enthusiastic approach to his singing, which sadly is the best part of the record. His latest work is a murder mystery titled Jemez Spring. Anaya seems incapable of writing about something that is not in, about or concerned with New Mexico and the Southwest.

Keeping zydeco bouncing

Three decades of being deeply rooted in southern Creole and Cajun music has kept Ida Guillory's band alive. Today Queen Ida and her Zydeco Band will play at Popejoy Hall for fat Tuesday. "The style of music is actually more on the folk side," Guillory said.

Comedian honors body shots

Class was not the only time Steve Hofstetter took notes during his years at Columbia University. As an author, comedian and nationally syndicated columnist, the 24-year-old took his college experience - everything from the all-night parties to the dining hall food - and threw in his sharp and witty observations to create his second book, Student Body Shots: Another Round.

Ceramic class turns Japanese

Kathy Cyman said her porcelain pottery class is the only one of its kind offered in the country. The class introduces centuries-old Japanese pottery methods, as well as the history and culture behind them. Cyman, who has taught the class for 14 years, focuses on the traditional Japanese Arita method, which is based on delicate and specific steps of porcelain sculpting.

Book looks at elevation, learning in marijuana use

Louis Silverstein thinks marijuana never gets the respect it deserves. This should not be the case, said Silverstein, a professor of liberal education at Chicago's Columbia College and author of Deep Spirit & Great Heart: Living in Marijuana Consciousness, in which he takes a more profound and enlightened look at the popular illegal intoxicant.
