Department building in desperate need of repair

The Department of Communication and Journalism is seeking an estimated $3.7 million in capital improvement funds to renovate its 54-year-old building that department officials say is badly in need of repairs. Rising maintenance costs and a demand for more space are key reasons for the request, made by the department to University administrators who allocate state funds each year, said Brad Hall, the department's chairman.

Filmmaker discusses work, history

Filmmaker Paul Espinosa tells tales of the American Southwest's culture and history, from the hunt for Pancho Villa to the U.S.- Mexican War of 1846 and the first successful legal challenge to segregation of Mexican-American children in schools. A selection of his films was the subject of Saturday's film festival at the Southwest Broadway Cultural Center, 1025 Broadway Blvd.

Credit card companies target students, pt. 1

As UNM students return to class this fall, they can expect to be greeted by the familiar sights, sounds and temptations of credit card solicitors, a growing trend at colleges and universities throughout the nation. Kelly Rote, a communications manager for Consumer Credit Counseling, said her national credit counseling agency continues to see an increase in the number of recent college graduates seeking help with out-of-control debt.
