Gloom hits 80th anniversary

A 50-foot man stuffed with shredded prison documents will go up in flames tonight at Fort Marcy Park in Santa Fe. Zozobra, or "Old Man Gloom" is burned to rid spectators of their troubles of the previous year. Thousands of people, including UNM students, will attend the 80th burning.

Business up for UNM-area restaurants

Area businesses are feeling the impact of students coming back for the fall semester. "We definitely have a parking problem," said Dorothy Rainosek, co-owner of Frontier Restaurant. "Business is good and up from the summer considerably, but people park here for class or to go buy a book on campus.

Paying off the teacher comes at a high price

It may not be a good idea to ask instructors what their annual salary is, but the Public Information List of UNM Employees in Zimmerman Library has it if you really want to know. The salary book at the Reserves Desk is a 146-page list with the names, job titles and annual salaries of all 7,549 UNM employees as of July 31.

Bush gathers support in N.M.

With only two months until the 2004 presidential election, President George W. Bush visited Albuquerque Thursday in hopes of making New Mexico "Bush country" this November. The president spoke to more than 11,000 of his supporters in an afternoon rally at the Albuquerque Convention Center, said Danny Diaz, regional spokesperson for the Bush-Cheney campaign.

Professor digs into historic adobe home

It may have just been some dirt to the naked eye, but it was a gold mine to a trained archeologist, and time was running out. The ruins of an adobe home thought to be over a hundred years old were the focus of a three-month archeological dig in Albuquerque's North Valley, and it will conclude today.

Weather doesn't wash out Bush supporters

Rain did not stop two dozen UNM Republicans from showing their support for George Bush July 15 at a Party for the President held at the Phi Delta Theta fraternity house. The party was one of 7,000 events held nationwide to "increase voter registration and expand the president's volunteer base," said Phil Garcia, a UNM student who organized the event.

Web dissertation goes global

It was a long night for Casey Malarcher. Malarcher, a graduate student and Ph.D. candidate, began defending his doctoral dissertation last Thursday at 2 a.m. from Seoul, South Korea. Malarcher said this is the first UNM Web conference that has reached three continents, and the first where the candidate has been outside the United States.

Engineer scores MWC award

It is not easy being a student and an athlete, but baseball player Sean Murray has both roles down to a science. Murray, who balances his time between being a civil engineering major and the Lobos' first baseman, has been chosen as the 2004 Mountain West Conference Male Student Athlete of the Year.

Native American studies degree nears approval

After more than 30 years of planning, a bachelor's degree in Native American studies may be a possibility for UNM students. "People have been working on this since the first part of the '70s," said John Gates, director of Native American studies. "It has been in the works for a while.

Athletes work out, earn strong honors

Playing professional football has been a childhood dream of Lobo offensive lineman Claude Terrell. As UNM's strongest male athlete, he is perhaps the best candidate. Terrell who weighs about 320 pounds, can bench press 450 pounds and squat 650, Strength Coordinator Mark Paulsen said.
