Matt Gerety has high expectations for the compassion and charity of people on campus. Gerety, general military course adviser, is the organizer for Operation Iraqi Children, a semester-long drive for school supplies for Iraqi children.

Bookstore promotes children's literacy at fair

by Lisa Adams Daily Lobo UNM alumnae Marilyn Markel and Carilyn Alarid said it took them about 10 years to get their children's book published. "We did a lot of work editing the book," Alarid said. The sisters were part of the UNM Bookstore Children's Book Fair on Saturday.

by Lisa Adams Daily Lobo About 300 African-American high school students from across New Mexico visited the campus Thursday to see what UNM is all about. Scott Carreathers, director of African American Student Services, said African-American Student Day is organized to expose students to post-secondary education and the University.

Stargazers take close look at Mars

by Lisa Adams Daily Lobo Mars was the attraction at LodeStar Astronomy Center on Saturday night. Michael Sepulveda, observatory director, said he was excited about the proximity of the Red Planet because Mars is 69 million kilometers from Earth and is the closest it will be until the year 2018.

El Centro guides college hopefuls

by Lisa Adams Daily Lobo About 800 students from 39 local high schools visited UNM on Thursday to attend Hispano Student Day. Rosa Cervantes, student program specialist with El Centro de la Raza, said the event originated as a way for high school students to tour the campus and learn more about college life.
