UNM Webmail gets upgrade

UNM Webmail received a makeover this summer. Students, staff and faculty are now able to add features to their Webmail. The MyUNM Web site also got a face-lift. Steve Spence, the CIRT technical support analyst, said the main features of the improved MyUNM site include an updated e-mail channel, a calendar and a built-in help feature.

LANL management will likely go to UC

Opportunities for UNM lie in the hands of Los Alamos National Labs. University of California manages the labs, and the contract will be up for bid soon. Even though UNM will not be a part of the management team, it is in the best interest of the University for UC to get the lab, UNM President Louis Caldera said.

Othiamba Umi and Kimerie Smith were crowned the second Mr. and Ms. Black UNM on Saturday at the SUB. Eight contestants took turns convincing a panel of three judges why they should represent the African-American community at UNM.

A conference on Friday discussed Gov. Bill Richardson's $10 million media arts incentive. Eric Whitmore of UNM Art Technology Center said after years of discussion on how to get people from all media fields together, the governor's office suggested this conference.

A study conducted at UNM claims men and women think differently. But that doesn't mean one gender is more intelligent than the other, the report states. The paper appeared in an issue of the journal NeuroImage and was published by Rex Jung, an assistant research professor at UNM.

Credit card reps call police on UNM student

Two representatives from Citibank who were handing out fliers offering a free sub from Blimpie's called UNMPD on a student Wednesday. The marketers, who refused to identify themselves, said Teddy Yates was harassing them, because he followed them around campus warning students their coupons were a scam.

Wreaking heavenly Havoc on metal fans

The '80s metal band era has returned. The Launchpad welcomed southern California band Havoc for an all-ages show on Saturday as an opener for the Prids. Band members took the stage for a soundcheck with feathered '80s metal hair and tight leather pants. They warmed up by teasing the audience with catchy rhythms until the lights faded and the show began.

Legislators snub alumni party

The Alumni Association has hosted house receptions for New Mexico legislators for six years, but the reception Wednesday night was the first time none of the invited legislators showed up. Every year, the UNM Alumni Association holds several receptions, Lobos for Legislation, inviting three to 12 legislators from around the state.

Giving tree opportunity for helping foster kids

Being tight on holiday cash hasn't stopped students from giving presents to foster children in New Mexico. ASUNM Community Experience is co-sponsoring a giving tree with the SUB to support Friends of New Mexico, a group that helps foster children. Chelsea Armstrong, assistant director of Community Experience, said the organization gets in touch with social workers to find out what the kids want for Christmas.

Thanksgiving holds international appeal

Although Thanksgiving isn't until tomorrow, some international students have already celebrated the holiday. On Friday, host families prepared a lunch of traditional Thanksgiving dishes for international students, and a dance was held afterward. Linda Melville, advisement specialist for the International Studies Program, said the office has considered celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday several times, but have held the event on different days because international students typically do not celebrate it.
