Ecological society elects professor as president

University biology professor Cliff Dahm has been elected president of the North American Benthological Society, a professional association for freshwater researchers. The society is the world's largest organization of stream and river ecologists and has more than 2,000 members.

UNM's occupational therapy courses rank

April is national occupational therapy month and UNM is doing its part to provide the best occupational therapists possible. UNM's Occupational Therapy Graduate Program, offered through the School of Medicine, is an accredited program that began three years ago, said Terry Crowe, the founding director of the program and a medical professor.

Community members argue for, against war

About 40 people gathered in Dane Smith Hall Wednesday night to hear two speakers debate the pros and cons of waging war against Iraq. The pro speaker for the event was Alex Hughes, a UNM sophomore and member of the College Republicans. He talked about the number of banned weapons that Saddam Hussein has in his possession and that are currently missing.

UNM faculty, staff and students who are interested in writing manuscripts can attend a free panel discussion tonight meant to inform would-be writers about the ins and outs of getting published.

UNM construction to wrap up

UNM is now investing nearly $82 million in utility and construction projects across campus. However, University officials say the end is near for many of those on-going campus projects, eliminating the orange flags, heavy construction equipment and safety barricades that have become an-all-too familiar sight for the UNM community.

City recognizes prevention efforts

UNM has received an award from the City of Albuquerque for striving to reduce the amount of pollution within the community. The city's Public Works Department, the Albuquerque City Council, the Wastewater Utility Division, the Industrial Pretreatment Program and the Pollution Prevention Program presented UNM with the Pollution Prevention Award of Excellence on Jan.

Off-campus branches to split

UNM's Continuing Education and Extended University are formally separating because officials believe the move will allow the University to better serve students. "Because of the number of students we're serving and the number of classes we have, it has become a very successful enterprise and it was time for us to separate the Continuing Education and the Extended University," said Jer¢nimo Dom°nguez, vice provost for Extended University.

Scientist's projects recognized

An exhibit recognizing the more than 60 years worth of work by Armand Winfield, director of the UNM Training and Research Institute for Plastics, is on display in the Center for Southwest Research in Zimmerman Library this semester. "I am very pleased to be able to show a few of my interesting and unusual projects, which include images of the world's first soft bathroom, uses of atoms for peace, low cost housing for developing countries, work at the New York World's Fair (1963) and in the 1970's, amusement parks and sets for the Metropolitan Opera," Winfield said in a UNM press release.

Engineering Department scores a Top Tier listing

Representatives from the Xilinx corporation presented UNM's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department with a plaque during a ceremony acknowledging UNM as a Top Tier Xilinx university. The plaque was awarded in recognition of outstanding work. Six other Universities were also recognized as being in the Top Tier.

UNM community memorializes transgender murders

Several UNM groups collaborated with the Albuquerque community to honor all the transgender people who have been victims of hate crimes during the past year. The fourth-annual National Transgender Day Remembrance celebration, held Wednesday at Civic Plaza in Downtown Albuquerque, was celebrated nationwide in 85 cities and seven countries in memory of the 27 transgenders who have been murdered since the last day of remembrance on Nov.
