Albuquerque Pride Fest 2020 canceled

Albuquerque’s Pride ceremonies in June were officially canceled this week, the latest cancellation for the City of Albuquerque.  The cancellation follows an outbreak of the novel coronavirus in Bernalillo county. As of April 13, there were at least 440 cases of COVID-19 in New Mexico’s most populous county along with 16 deaths.  “We are issuing full refunds and you’ll receive an email within the next 1-2 days to confirm your refund has been issued. At that point, it’ll take 5-7 banking days for your funds to be available for use,” Neil Macernie wrote in a press release about the yearly events.

Review: Pointless "El Camino" perfects nostalgia fuel

I’m not sure who asked for this movie, and I’m not sure why I watched it.  “El Camino” is the latest spinoff in the “Breaking Bad” series, following the commercial and critical success of “Better Call Saul.” The 2-hour movie acts as an epilogue to the beloved show.  The movie picks up immediately after the final episode of “Breaking Bad” as Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) speeds away from his cage in Todd’s (Jesse Plemons) Chevy El Camino. After reconnecting with fan-favorites Badger (Matt Jones) and Skinny Pete (Charles Baker,) Pinkman seeks to leave the Albuquerque behind.

UNM sees another decline in enrollment

For the seventh consecutive year, student enrollment at the University of New Mexico has dropped — certain to cause a ripple of effects in funding throughout the University. Undergraduate enrollment fell 6.5% (16,170) for the fall 2019 semester, while combined graduate and professional enrollment fell 6% (6,130), contributing to a five-year decline of 16.67% (22,792). The Albuquerque Journal reported that UNM expects a $4 million budget shortfall as a result of the enrollment decline. In 2018, UNM saw a $10 million shortfall from a 7% decline.

The man behind the SUB retires

You might not know his name, but chances are Walter Miller’s career, and the decisions he’s made throughout that career, affected your life at the University of New Mexico.  Now, the vice president of Student Life and 25-year UNM administrator for is set to retire. For Miller, that means sticking around UNM, finishing one last looming project and hitting a few shows a Popejoy from time-to-time.  It’s difficult to quantify a person’s accomplishments, but one place to start is money. In his time at UNM, Miller oversaw a massive overhaul of the Student Union Building that priced out at $25 million. Unlike similar buildings across the country, UNM’s SUB was funded with student fees, according to Miller.

Men's soccer and other clubs receive UNM funding

After being cut from the University of New Mexico’s budget, the UNM Men’s Soccer team along with other UNM club sports are getting a financial and institutional upgrade, courtesy of the President’s discretionary funds.  The “enhanced club-sport program” would include Men’s Soccer, Men and Women’s Rugby, Lobo Hockey and the yet-to-be established Men and Women’s Ski. The program, funded by the President and the Department of Recreational Services, would grant the clubs access to additional financial and institutional resources — such as practice facilities.  Terry Babbitt, chief of staff for UNM President Garrnett Stokes, said there wasn’t a set budget for the program yet. However, sources close to the matter have told the Daily Lobo that Stokes may spend up to $300,000 to support the program.

"Hamilton" to come to Popejoy

Last week Popejoy announced that "Hamilton" will be coming to the University of New Mexico sometime during the 2020-2021 season.  The dates of the performance, the price of tickets and the sale date of the tickets have not yet been announced. However, Popejoy said that 2019 - 2020 season pass holders will have first access to purchase tickets.
