Students give cigs a kick in the backside

UNM students publicized the dangers of smoking Friday with the first Kick Butts Day. UNM's Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention worked with the newly formed student organization, Expose, to plan the day's events. The goal of Expose is to let college students know that tobacco companies are targeting them, and to advise students not to fall prey to those messages, said Sarah Chaara, a UNM student who started the organization.

900 UNM students volunteer

Students will storm Albuquerque on Saturday for UNM's biggest community-service event. Spring Storm is a day dedicated to community service around the city, said Saraswati Khalsa, assistant director of Community Experience, the ASUNM executive agency that coordinates the event.

Stress linked to pain, depression

With finals week approaching, anxiety and depression levels are up and might cause added aches and pain for students. According to a recent survey conducted by Freedom From Fear, increased pain is directly attributed to anxiety and depression. Freedom From Fear is a mental illness advocacy group that focuses primarily on anxiety and depression disorders.

N.M. gas prices hit record highs

Gas prices are at record highs this week, but there are things UNM students can do to save money on fuel. According to an AAA New Mexico news release, the state's record for gas prices was set Friday at $1.684 per gallon. The national average is $1.755 per gallon.

Groups tout STI awareness

Sexually transmitted infections are prevalent in college communities and Peer Educators want to raise UNM's awareness. Booths will be set up today by local groups and national organizations west of Zimmerman Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. "April is STI Awareness Month, so we thought the beginning of April would be a good time to have an awareness day," said Lindsey Bolton, event coordinator.

Young girl's fight for life raises awareness

Kailee Wells has become somewhat of a hero in New Mexico since her public battle with aplastic anemia began. The seven-year-old girl, who doctors say has no more than a year to live, has become the posterchild for bone marrow donations that can help the more than 3,000 people in the United States who will die without a bone marrow transplant.

FDA slaps ban on ephedrine use

Because of the increasing amount of information on ephedrine's dangers, the FDA banned all supplements containing it, but UNM is not expecting to feel any effects from the decision. Ephedrine, derived from an herb native to central Asia, is commonly used to enhance sports performance, increase energy and is used as a weight loss supplement.

Student skates toward success

Students opening their own businesses have been a recent trend at UNM, and Nicole Montes is no exception. The 22-year-old UNM junior is the owner of the Silver Board Shop near campus. The shop, which caters to skateboard and snowboard enthusiasts, opened the first week of December.

UNM readies for flu season

The dreaded flu season is coming and students are warned to get their yearly vaccine to avoid getting sick. "Students in the dorms should get the flu shot to prevent getting sick and getting behind in school," said Beverly Kloeppel, interim director at the Student Health Center.
