Multiple departments at the University of New Mexico offer courses that include or are centered around gender studies, relationship issues, LGBTQ rights and sexuality studies. If students are interested in taking a course discussing these themes, here are some courses separated by department.
The Endangered Species Act is a set of laws that has helped save many different plant and animal species from going extinct, as well as preserved wildlife and natural ecosystems throughout the country. Over the course of summer 2018 the current administration proposed a set of bills to change the Endangered Species Act and subsequently limit its protections. The proposed changes are detailed in a technical 100-page long document. Some of the most controversial changes proposed include loosening the regulations protecting threatened species and considering the economic consequences of protecting a species before listing them as endangered.
Twitter is now flush with reviews of local bathrooms — and some of the University of New Mexico’s toilets are tanking. Nicholas Sandoval, a 3rd year communication and interdisciplinary film and media Major at UNM, has gathered buzz from his bathroom reviews on campus and around the Albuquerque area. Sandoval started the Twitter account @BathroomReview5 around the beginning of September, and has already gained 127 followers in that time.
The University of New Mexico School of Medicine is helping make medical professionals in the state, and all around the country, more knowledgeable with diagnosing and effectively treating osteoporosis through a learning program for medical professionals called Bone Health TeleECHO. According to the UNM Bone Health website, there are available treatments for osteoporosis that can help prolong life. Only about 20 percent of patients with hip fractures are treated to help prevent the risk of future fractures.
Recording artist Malcolm James McCormick, more popularly known as Mac Miller, was found deceased in his Los Angeles home on Thursday, Sept. 7, the result of an apparent drug overdose. His passing came as a shock to the music community. With his upcoming tour set to start in October and his optimistic tweets, fans saw this as Mac hitting his stride and the projection of his career was looking to be increasingly successful.
Chaouki Abdallah, the current provost at the University of New Mexico, has recently been selected as a finalist for the position of Vice President of Research at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Abdallah has held the provost position over the past 7 years, taking brief break to be interim president of UNM. “The Provost is responsible for everything academic on the Main Campus and the branches, and in some ways collaborating with the Health Sciences, especially at the undergraduate level,” Abdallah said. “All the colleges, student services and faculty ultimately go through the provost to the president.”
Safiya Umoja Noble, Ph.D. spoke to students at the University of New Mexico Tuesday about the causes and impact of racial and gender biases found in algorithms that search engines use. Noble is an assistant professor in the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California and the author of the book, “Algorithms of Oppression.” Noble’s lecture covered many topics including racial stereotypes and biases found in search engine algorithms, corporate and political interests being pushed through the manipulation of search results, amplification of hate on different digital platforms and the rise of far-right-wing radicalization due to the anonymity of the internet as well as inaccurate information found on numerous websites.
