UNM program discusses ethical issues in health care

Assisted suicide and abortion are just some of the ethical issues health care providers face every day. The UNM Institute for Ethics is offering a program to help medical workers deal with ethical questions. The Joan Gibson Health Care Ethics Certificate Program began Feb.

Fair aims to suit up students for jobs

Career Services will host a job fair in the SUB on Tuesday. This year's job fair will be the largest UNM has hosted, said Jenna Crabb, director of Career Services. More than 120 employers are attending, she said. "It's awesome. I mean, this is our largest event," Crabb said.

Governor requests funds for dental school at UNM

There has never been a dental school in New Mexico. But that can change if Gov. Bill Richardson gets his way. Richardson is asking the Legislature for money to create New Mexico's first dental school at UNM. A dental school could be costly, said Mark Moores, director of the New Mexico Dental Association.

Health care in New Mexico

Health care is a hot-button issue for Americans who feel sick and abandoned by modern medicine. But reforming the medical industry has proved divisive. "We are a very expensive health care system, and our health indicators don't really reflect that we're getting good value for the money that we're spending on our health care system," said Beverly Kloeppel, director of the Student Health Center.

Starbucks to open 4th shop near campus

University-area coffee shops will soon have to contend with another Starbucks. Starbucks is opening a shop at Central Avenue and Terrace Street, but no opening date has been announced, a spokesperson for Starbucks said. The shop will be the fourth Starbucks within one mile of Main Campus and has some local coffee shop customers and employees concerned.

TV show treats local family to an 'Extreme' renovation

Gerald Martinez and his family woke up to the news last week that their house would be renovated for the TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Martinez is a pastor at Joshua's Vineyard Church. He and his family were rewarded the home makeover for their help in rebuilding the Trumbull Park Village - a neighborhood in southeast Albuquerque.

Center offers drug-abuse help

UNM students will be able to receive substance-abuse treatment this semester. The City of Albuquerque and the UNM Institute for Social Research are offering the service. The new service will be available through the Albuquerque Metropolitan Central Intake.

Conference looks to NM's film future

About 220 people attended a conference Friday to discuss the state's film industry. UNM held the New Mexico Media Industries Conference in the SUB. Attendees eager to learn about the state's growing film industry attended free classes throughout the day.

Survey addresses on-campus parking (Video)

Taking an online survey can help Parking and Transportation Services improve its operations. "We take these, compile the answers and look at areas where we can improve," said Clovis Acosta, director of the department. "We are hoping to get several thousand responses - a good pool so we can mix it up."
