Mentor program to cut recreation

by Felicia Fonseca Daily Lobo More work and less play for the participants of Natural High. The Natural High program is moving. On May 15, it will have a new home at Special Programs, and the focus will be narrowed to mentoring students, said Tim Gutierrez, director of Special Programs.

Meeting explores Banner troubles

by Felicia Fonseca Daily Lobo The Finance Department was in the hot seat Friday in Woodward Hall. As the only department that fully implemented the Banner system, people from the Finance Department fielded many of the questions about what to expect. Banner is a Web-based system designed to eliminate many of UNM's paper-based administrative and business systems.

Mentor program faces change

by Felicia Fonseca Daily Lobo UNM students in elementary and secondary education programs will be hit with changes in the fall. Supervisors will lose their jobs, and first-year and student teachers might be supervised by graduate assistants, many of whom have never taught in a classroom.

Program rebounds after name change

Enrique Lamadrid wants Chicano studies to be the next success story in University College. He changed the name of the program, is looking to change funding from soft to hard money and is boasting a 30 percent increase in enrollment this semester. "All the wind is blowing in our direction at this point," said Lamadrid, director of the program.

Top recruits come at a price

Although UNM spends $300 to recruit a freshman, it spends one-third more to recruit students in the top 10 percent of their high schools academically. Because UNM is not known for academics, Terry Babbitt, director of UNM's Recruitment Services Center said it's important to recruit the state's top students to improve the University's reputation.

Recruiters apply personal touch

The University is on a mission to attract high school seniors to UNM. UNM makes about 600 personal phone calls per night to prospective students, said Terry Babbitt, director of UNM Recruitment Services. To make a better connection with students, Babbitt said the recruitment office has a telephone outreach program that is in full swing at this time of year.

Recruiters fish for freshmen

UNM freshmen recruits for sale - $300 each. Of course, that's a low price compared to the national average of $500 to $600, which is what it costs to recruit a student to a flagship university, said Terry Babbitt, director of UNM's Recruitment Services Office.

Med students demonstrate for universal health care

Mandy Pino said she had hoped the United States would have universal health care by the time her children were grown. She has great-grandchildren now. By the time her great-grandchildren are older, it might happen, she said. Pino and about 20 others lined Lomas Boulevard on Friday to rally for universal health care.

Small changes can equal energy savings

Saving energy used to be a necessity. Now it's a habit. Wes Furman, a post-graduate student, grew up in a house in the forest where power outages were common. Getting electricity was always difficult, he said. Now that he has moved out of the forest and into the city, he said cutting back on energy use comes naturally, because his parents used to do it.

ASUNM tables push for closed week

ASUNM hasn't made much noise for a prep week so far this year. "Sometimes those things are kind of seasonal depending on who is pushing it," said Ed Desantis, president of Faculty Senate. The item was not approved last year in Faculty Senate. Former ASUNM President Jennifer Onuska was a strong advocate for the issue and said it would inevitably help students do better on finals.
