Crime briefs for December 3, 2018

Battery on healthcare personnel at UNMH On Nov. 12, a suspect was transported to University of New Mexico Hospital after he was unresponsive during a bed check at the Metropolitan Detention Center, according to a report. When he was told nurses at UNMH would give him an IV, he became violent. As one nurse attempted to place a tourniquet on his arm in order to draw blood, the suspect kicked her in the left arm. The nurse said her arm was sore, and she thought it may bruise. Two correction officers who transported the suspect to UNMH witnessed the incident. The correction officers confirmed the nurse’s statements were true. The case will be sent to the District Attorney’s Office.

On Oct. 22, an officer was sent to the University of New Mexico Police Department Substation because someone reported an assault, according to a report. The officer spoke with a female and her 16-year-old student, who said he was walking to school around 9 a.m. when he began passing a roundabout north of Lomas Boulevard NE and Yale Boulevard NE. That was when a male driving a green pickup truck called the student a racial slur and spat — the saliva landed on the ground in front of the student. “The student reported the incident to his school’s head administrator (who) then escorted the student to the UNM Police Substation to report the incident,” the report states. The student completed a written statement.

Crime Briefs for November 12, 2018

On the afternoon of Oct. 7, an officer was on patrol at A Lot near the tennis courts and the Student Residence Center, an area “recently subjected to a large number of property-related thefts,” according to a UNMPD report. A male was riding his bike and looking from left to right in the parking lot. When he saw officers in a marked patrol vehicle, he turned into the student housing area. A black cylindrical item and a pair of yellow-handled wire cutters stuck out of the male’s pants pockets. He pedaled fast, appearing to try to escape from University of New Mexico Police Department officers. He was eventually out of sight. An officer saw him again with a female who the officer recognized as a suspect in recent thefts at the Student Union Building. The officer asked if they were students, staff or faculty — they said they were not. The male began sweating and hesitated to reply when the officer asked him why he rode away so quickly.

Crime briefs for Nov. 5, 2018

When the officer arrived, dispatch received a call stating the male was yelling he had a gun. Over the radio, the officer asked for assistance at Ortega Hall and notified other officers there was a possible firearm.

Crime Briefs for Oct. 29, 2018

Burglary, criminal damage at Santa Ana Star Field Press Box On Oct. 5, an officer was sent to 1313 University Blvd. SE, due to a burglary no longer in progress at the press box at the Santa Ana Star Field, according to a University of New Mexico Police Department report. When the officer arrived, the student who contacted police said it appeared that the suspect(s) entered the press box through a window. The student said he left his laptop in the press box overnight, and it was taken. It appeared the suspect(s) forced the window open, damaging it. Footprints on the top of a desk seem to indicate that only one suspect was involved in taking the laptop. The laptop could not be entered into the National Crime Information Center, because the student did not provide a serial number. The area was searched. However, no suspicious activity on Oct. 5 or the evening of Oct. 4 was observed.

Battery on a healthcare worker at UNM Psychiatric Center On the afternoon of Sept. 30, University of New Mexico Hospital security called UNM Police Department dispatch, stating that a patient battered a staff member at the UNM Psychiatric Center, according to a report. UNMH security gathered statements from the battered staff member and a witness. The forms were given to the UNMPD officer who was on scene. The statements indicated that a patient grabbed the staff member’s buttocks as she exited the nurses’ station on the east wing of the center. She pushed his hand away and yelled for him to stop. She said she would like to press charges.

Possession of Controlled Substance at Yale Parking Structure On the morning of Oct. 1, three officers were sent to the Yale parking structure due to a disturbance, according to a report. Dispatch said a person with a baseball bat broke through the windows of a red Toyota parked on the top floor of the parking structure, and the person was inside. When officers arrived, the windows were not broken, but at least two people were inside. One officer told the people to exit the vehicle one at a time. A male exited from the driver’s seat — he was handcuffed and patted down for weapons. When asked if he had weapons or needles, the male said he had a knife, but he did not know if he had needles.

Criminal Trespass and Resisting, Evading or Obstructing an Officer On Sept. 23, two officers were sent to a bathroom on the third floor of the University of New Mexico Student Union Building because of a man’s disorderly conduct, according to a UNM Police Department report. SUB staff and UNMPD know the man well, due to many other past incidents. He was given a letter that banned him from campus on April 5, 2018. He has returned to campus multiple times since the ban and has been reminded that he cannot be on campus. When the officers arrived, a custodian said he saw the man in the men’s restroom on the third floor washing dishes in the sink. The custodian saw there was water on the counter, placed a washcloth there and told the man to clean the mess when he was done.

Crime Briefs for Sept. 30, 2018

Battery and child abuse at UNMH lobby On the morning of Aug. 27, an officer was sent to the University of New Mexico Hospital, due to a disturbance and individuals refusing to leave after UNMH security asked them to, according to a UNMPD report. A hospital security guard told a police officer that family members fought in the lobby. The officer spoke with a woman who said she and her mother came to UNMH to visit her aunt, who was a patient there. The woman and her mother saw other family members yelling at each other on the second floor. Security and the other family members told the woman and her mother to leave the area. The woman and her mother went to the lobby, and other family members approached them. A verbal argument began. Then a female suspect pushed and struck the woman and her mother, who was holding her grandchild. The suspect struck the child during the incident. The officer saw that the child’s left cheek was slightly red.
