Prof sparks children's interest in science

Stanley Micklavzina sometimes ends his demonstrations by propelling himself across the stage with a fire extinguisher-powered go-cart. This time, he caused a 55-gallon drum to collapse. Dr. Stan's Science Circus came to town Saturday at Regener Hall with science demonstrations aimed at entertaining parents, teachers, children and UNM students.

ASUNM craft fair shows off local talent

Michael Olivares said when he's showing his art, it feels like his seventh birthday all over again. That was his best birthday ever. Olivares is a painter. Many of his paintings have been scanned and transferred onto magnets that were on display Wednesday as part of the ASUNM Holiday Crafts Fair.

Students change study techniques

Trying to memorize what a professor says might not be the best way to study. Susan Deese-Roberts, director of Center for the Advancement of Scholarship in Teaching and Learning, said there are three modes of studying styles - auditory, visual and tactual. "Students either like to hear it, which means they are probably an auditory learner; see it, meaning visual learner; or move around while they are learning, which is usually tactile and kinesthetic," Deese-Roberts said.

Football manager a team player

He couldn't play the game, so he became the manager. "In essence, I feel like part of the team," said Damien Farris, student manager of the UNM football team. "If we don't win, I feel like I could have done more, maybe if I helped out the coaches more." Farris played football his freshman year at Valley High School, but a knee injury near the end of the season took him off the team.

Profile:Neighborly woman befriends students

Students move in and out of the University area. Evelyn Abbott, 84, said each coming and going gives her a chance to meet new people. "If I need a can open, I take it outside and stop the first student I see to open it for me," she said. "They put down their books and take the can and opener and open it for me.
