UNM President Bob Frank announced Sunday that he will be awarding his 2014 Presidential Awards of Distinction to Neurosurgery Department chair Dr. Howard Yonas and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez.
A jury has ordered UNM to pay more than $350,000 to a former employee who was fired for leaving work after an anxiety-fueled situation. Janet Alroy, a human resources employee, was fired in 2009 after having an intense panic attack, leaving her office and not returning for two days, according to court records.Tim White of Valdez and White Law Firm, who represented Alroy in her wrongful termination lawsuit, said the case has been ongoing for nearly five years and was originally ruled in favor of UNM. But White appealed the decision and won the case earlier this month.
The battle over abortion is raging again in the southwest. Just a year after Albuquerque struck down a late-term abortion ban, Colorado voters are facing a proposed amendment to the state constitution that has the potential to ban all abortions, according to election documents.The proposed Amendment 67, titled “Protection of Pregnant Mothers and Unborn Children,” seeks to change the definition of “person” and “child” to include “unborn human beings,” according to the amendment.
Starting next year, UNM’s student publications will not have to wait for funding from student leadership, said Texanna Martin, president of the Graduate and Professional Student Association.Two of UNM’s literary magazines had to wait to receive funding until last week because the GPSA had to run through legal measures in order to send the money, Martin said.“This isn’t the sort of thing that has a 24 hour turnaround,” Martin said, “But now that everything is in place, there shouldn’t be a problem next year.”The GPSA provides funding to both “Conceptions Southwest” and “Best Student Essays,” but during the last Student Publication board meeting on Sept.
UNM Police have been cracking down on bike thieves through sting operations. A joint effort between UNMPD and the Albuquerque Police Department has already caught one alleged repeat offender, Daniel Lee Lawrence, who had a warrant for bike theft, said Lt. Tim Stump, UNMPD’s public information officer.Lawrence was arrested on Wednesday, after being seen riding a bait bicycle valued at $1,600, which was planted by APD at UNM Hospital, according to court documents.
Early-morning rain clouds parted and the sun illuminated psychics, gypsy dancers and henna healers who all came together to celebrate the autumnal equinox. Albuquerque Pagan Pride Day took over Baatan Park on Sunday to educate the public about pagan traditions, encourage community service and bring food to those in need during the harvest season, said Ramona Stipe, event coordinator and president of the board for Pagan Pride Day.The event was one of 115 that took place nationwide over the past week, all of which were aimed at helping others in a loving way and spreading awareness, Stipe said.
Scams targeting international students are on the rise, and at least one student has paid the price this semester.
Nearly $2,200 has been raised since President Bob Frank challenged the UNM community to donate to ALS research after taking the Ice Bucket Challenge on Wednesday. Frank took the icy bath with several other top UNM administrators in Smith Plaza in front of Zimmerman Library after being challenged by Mayor Richard Berry and head Soccer Coach Jeremy Fishbein last week, Ethan Rule, University marketing representative, said. Frank said campus administrators will collectively match the donations up to $1,000 dollars.
Low income students can double their money at a UNM-area market. Nancy Erickson, manager of Albuquerque Growers’ Market at Presbyterian, said her market price matches any EBT or SNAP purchases up to $20, doubling the amount of food those customers can purchase. The market, which is located in the Northeast corner of the Downtown Presbyterian Hospital parking lot, focuses on providing excellent food from local growers, she said. “I have a deep appreciation for fresh local food that goes back as far as I can remember”, she said. The market has been operating for three years, every Tuesday from 7 a.m.
