Staff disputes disparity in pay raises

UNM gave a 2 percent raise to staff and a 3 percent raise to faculty, and the Staff Union is displeased with that. Any staff member who made less than $35,000 per year got a 5 percent raise, but union president Terry Mulcahy said the raise hardly covers everyone on staff.

UNM recruits across the globe

UNM wants to bring more international students to the school in the coming year. Vice President for Student Affairs Cheo Torres and the Albuquerque Council for International Visitors signed an agreement last week to work together to increase enrollment of international students.

Alumnus prevails over tumor

UNM alumnus Russell Bonn Jr. had to shelve his dreams after a baseball-sized tumor was discovered in his brain six years ago. The operation left him unable to keep his job, but that hasn't stopped him from pursuing success in a different field. Bonn graduated from UNM in 1986 with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and went to work as an engineer for Rockwell Industry.

Kings to continue practicing at Johnson

The Albuquerque Kings, a wheelchair basketball team, will be allowed to continue practicing at Johnson Gym. A new contract was worked out between the management of Johnson Center and a UNM group called the Associated Students for Empowerment. Johnson Center management had told the Kings they would have to find a new place to practice if they couldn't afford the gym's annual fee.

Basketball team can no longer afford gym

A local wheelchair basketball team said it cannot afford to continue practicing at Johnson Gym. For the past four years, the Albuquerque Kings have paid $500 to practice at Johnson Center's south gym for each session, said Jake Schmalzriedt, a forward on the team.
