Chewing away stress of finals

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Chewing gum may be the answer to success for students worried about passing their finals next week, said Serena Hoskinson, account executive of Wrigley Co. Wrigley, the official sponsor of finals week at several universities around the country, including UNM, offered students an opportunity to relax and relieve test tension at the Wrigley Gum Lounge on Tuesday in the SUB.

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo UNM's Kwanzaa celebration gave African-Americans the opportunity to unify and have an elegant event, said Cherita Price, president of Powerful Movement of Educated Sisters. Students and families gathered in the SUB Ballroom for UNM's Kwanzaa celebration Saturday.

Enrolling staff as students

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Last year, about 280 staff members were enrolled in courses at UNM. This year, the University hopes to register more than 300. Staff members from all departments on campus registered for classes for the spring semester at UNM on Thursday in the SUB.

Predator triumphs in costume contest

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Ghosts, goblins and monsters roamed through the UNM Bookstore on Monday for a Halloween costume contest. The first-place winner, David Jackson, was the Predator from the movie "Alien vs. Predator." The second-place winner, Satoshi Shimada, went as a samurai warrior, and the third-place winner called herself "The Shower Lady," which was a lady dressed like she was taking a shower.

Students fast to help feed the homeless

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Students went hungry Thursday to help provide food for the needy. UNM's third annual Ramadan Fast-A-Thon took place from sunrise at 7:23 a.m. until sunset at 6:17 p.m. The fast, hosted by UNM's Muslim Student Association, is a program where a person pledges to fast for one day.

Hurricane victims discuss racism

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Scott Pierson, who evacuated New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, said he is experiencing reverse racism from relief organizations. "Because I'm not black, or a mother with kids, I can't seem to get any help," he said.

Centennial Library reopens after flood

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo The University spent $2.3 million dollars to repair Centennial Library after a pipe froze and burst last December, spilling more than 40,000 gallons of water into the building. While some areas were accessible to students in March, the entire library was reopened Wednesday after nine months of construction.

Mayor will teach class on careers

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Mayor Martin Ch†vez will draw on his personal experience in government when he teaches his first class at UNM in the fall. "I'll only use that personal experience as a starting point in discussions," he said. "That, of course, will be intertwined with amusing anecdotes.

Fighting hunger on letter at a time

The Bread for the World organization set up a table in the SUB on Thursday to encourage passersby to do their part to end world hunger. The organization did not ask for cash donations. Instead it asked students to write letters asking Congress to support legislation that deals with hunger issues around the world. Sister MaryAnn Barrett, director of the Campus Ministry at the Newman Center, said handwritten letters are more personal than typed letters.
