Born to run: Team reveals its not-so-secret weapon

Shadrack Kiptoo is the New Mexico state champion in the high school boys 800-meter run, 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run. In fact, he has never lost a race in the Land of Enchantment. He has proven he is the fastest runner in the state, and some, such as UNM head cross-country coach Matt Henry, go as far as saying he is the best in the nation.

NFL player returns the favor

Brian Urlacher's high school football coach Speedy Faith said Urlacher is a 12-year-old boy in the body of an NFL player. "He really enjoys being out with the kids," Faith said. "You can't explain the way he is when he gets on the football field with a bunch of kids.

Major League drafts 3 from UNM

Three UNM baseball players were picked up by the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Senior pitcher Joe Salas went to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 24th round, junior shortstop Josh Mader was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 29th round, and junior pitcher Cooper Eddy was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 36th round.

Golfer shoots for excellence

Even though the Lobos came up short of winning the national title, junior Kailin Downs has something big to celebrate. Downs is the recipient of the prestigious Edith Cummings Munson Golf Award for the 2003-04 season. The award is presented to one NCAA women's golf player each year based on academic and athletic achievement.

UNM pole vaulter looks to land on MWC podium

Junior Bridgid Isworth is not only the indoor, outdoor and UNM stadium champion in the pole vault, she is also the third-ranked pole vaulter in Australia and 34th-ranked in the world. But the Melbourne, Australia native said she still gets an anxious feeling every time she jumps.

This year many Lobo athletes have put UNM in the national spotlight. No one got more national attention than senior kicker Katie Hnida who was the first woman to score in a college football game with two extra points in the season-opener against Texas State-San Marcos on Aug.

Former Lobos back at Pit

Two beloved Lobos and one arch nemesis return to The Pit tonight for a WNBA exhibition game between the Minnesota Lynx and the Sacramento Monarchs. Forwards Jordan Adams of the Lynx and Chelsea Grear of the Monarchs said they are excited to be back in Albuquerque - but Minnesota center Vanessa Hayden said she isn't so sure.

Training to be champions

Junior Mike Augustyniak broke the tight end power clean record with 352 pounds, and freshman safety Darius Ferguson set a school record in all sports with a 43-inch vertical leap last night at the annual Lobo Football Night of Champions. The Cherry team won 7-4 - while the Silver team cleaned up the field and carried all the weights and equipment back to the weight room.
