Alcohol tax proposed to deter drinking among minors

The next time beer lovers purchase their favorite brew, they may be paying a little more if one nonprofit organization has its way. The National Academy of Sciences recently proposed an increase in excise tax on alcohol, more specifically beer, as a way to curb underage drinking.

UNM can help kick habit

College students often blow off the risks associated with smoking, but recent studies show one in five smokers will die unless they kick the habit. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 24 percent of New Mexicans are smokers.

Lecturer addresses war issues in forum

The inappropriate justification of war and the impact that technology has had in significantly increasing the tendency for military conflicts were just a few of the topics of a lecture given by associate political science professor Mark Peceny Friday. The lecture, "Church and State on Violence and Peace," was the last of a three-part forum series addressing topics facing society, said Bob Keller, the center's priest.

Professors advised to avoid student dating

Though UNM has no formal policy regarding teachers dating students, a University attorney says campus officials are addressing the issue. Melanie Baise, assistant university counsel, said UNM recognizes the power differential between the student and teacher and that because students look up to teachers, they can be vulnerable.
