UNM retains travel grant

UNM student Erin Schultz went to Australia in 2003 to study bioluminescent ostracods - animals that live in the ocean and glow in the dark. "They're like bright blue flashes coming from the ocean," Schultz said. She was able to study the animals because of a program offered through the University Honors Program.

Push for student section continues

ASUNM will carry on the fight for a student-only section at The Pit even though basketball season is over for the Lobos. Chewy White, Chair of ASUNM's Pit ad hoc committee, said senators will pursue the section all year. He said the student-only section will allow students more freedom at games.

Bugs offer look into human heart

UNM biologists are studying fruit flies to understand the development of the human heart. Professor Richard Cripps and a team of biologists examine the fruit fly heart to study its similarities to the human heart. "The genes that construct the fly heart are closely related to those which form the human heart," Cripps said.

Bagpipe band tunes for St. Patty's

St. Patrick's Day is the most hectic time of year for High Desert Pipes and Drums. "As long as I've been involved, it's the busiest time," said Megan Maestas, a UNM student in the bagpipe band. UNM alumna Katy Houska, who has been in the band for eight years, said the band has several bookings for St.

Lunch honors feminism

International Women's Day is not only a celebration of women. It's also about honoring people who dedicate their lives to the well-being of women, including men, said Sandrea Gonzales, director of the Women's Resource Center at UNM. "It's a time to celebrate social justice and human rights," she said.

Student group touts good deeds

A campus organization inspired by the movie "Pay It Forward" performs random acts of kindness for people who need it. A graduate student at UNM chartered a student organization called the Giving Game to spread acts of kindness among others in December. Julie Steele, president of the organization, said she hopes to promote thoughtfulness and caring throughout UNM and the community.

ASUNM denies ad funding

ASUNM's Finance Committee showed consistency in slashing student groups' budgets Wednesday at the appropriation meeting. But this time, it was for its own organization. The Associated Students of UNM's Outreach and Appointments Committee went before the Finance Committee asking for $10,000 for advertising.

Student section may have a price

A student section at The Pit could cost UNM students $200 each in student fees. ASUNM wants to bring a student-only section back to The Pit. Senators are looking into increasing student fees to do so. "We really don't want to do that," student Sen. Erin Muffoletto said.

Vaccine poised to hit UNM

UNM students will soon be able to get a longer-lasting vaccination for meningitis. The Food and Drug Administration approved a vaccine for meningitis on Jan. 14 for 11- to 55-year-olds that will last twice as long as the vaccine that is administered now. Beverly Kloeppel, director of the Student Health Center, said it will carry the new vaccine.

Some like their yoga hot

Temperatures of more than 100 degrees bear down on practitioners of Bikram yoga. The heat causes the body to become more flexible, allowing people to get into more challenging positions. Bikram yoga brings balance back to the body, said David Rogers, owner and director of Bikram's Yoga.
