Judge: Brothels can't exist in a computer

The former UNM president accused of running an online sex ring could be off the hook after a judge ruled Monday that brothels can’t exist in cyberspace. New Mexico law defines a house of prostitution as a “place where prostitution is practiced, encouraged and allowed,” and according to court documents from Monday’s hearing, a website, online message board or computer is not a place of prostitution. The case is on hold following Monday’s ruling.

UNM welcomes new president

UNM President Robert Frank began his first week as president today. In President Frank’s Weekly Perspective, Frank said the first 120 days of his presidency will include a listening campaign, a campaign to improve all aspects of UNM by including the voice of UNM staff, students and faculty.

CNM adviser talks on transfer process

About 42 percent of UNM transfer students transfer from CNM, according to the Office of Institutional Research’s fact book for the 2009-2010 school year. To find out how UNM and CNM have collaborated to make the transfer process easier on students, the Daily Lobo talked to the Director of Academic Advisement and Job Connection Services at CNM, Tammy Strickler.

Donors running out of time

Although efforts to collect $675 million in donations for UNM began in 2006, the UNM Foundation has collected only about 60 percent of that money and has only two more years to reach the goal.

Lobos lose 6-0 lead, game

The softball team let a win slip away on Senior Day. Head Coach Erica Beach said the loss was a letdown because the Lobos had a 6-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.

Honors professor wins top UNM teaching award

Leslie Donovan said she was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis when she was 3 years old, and although she had supportive family and friends, the disease made her feel isolated as a teenager, but has helped her career as a teacher.

Student fees pay back bonds

UNM has a balance of almost $438 million in bonds, which it uses to pay for University improvements, and the administration depends on student fees to repay some of these bonds.
