Women's soccer: Lobos must clean up play at the 18s, coach says

At this early stage in the women’s soccer team, head coach Heather Dyche acknowledges that there are some things her team needs to work on. Among them, Dyche said, the Lobos need to clean up their play inside the 18-yard box. Issues inside both UNM’s box defensively and Colorado’s box offensively plagued the Lobos in Sunday’s 4-0 loss at Colorado, she said. “I think they were the better team,” Dyche said at the first coaches’ luncheon of the year on Tuesday at University Stadium. “I’m not trying to say we deserved to win that game, but I think a 4-0 result would suggest it was a 4-0 game, and it wasn’t. We created enough. We had some brilliant opportunities and we didn’t put them away."

Associate prof. studies censorship, surveillance on the Internet

Subjects such as Internet censorship and freedoms are becoming increasingly discussed as modern society moves further and further into the Digital Age. Jed Crandall, an associate professor of computer science at UNM, studies incidences of censorship and surveillance on the Web to get an idea of where inconsistencies may lie. Some of Crandall’s research efforts involve studying Facebook censorship in certain countries, but his team is currently taking on a much bigger project: measuring Internet use daily over three years and attempting to log almost every instance of censorship on the Web. The Daily Lobo speaks with Crandall about these issues:

Ring Around the Rosie, Pocket Full of Posies, Ashes, Ashes, we all went to Bubonicon. Caci Cooper, co-chair for Bubonicon, said Bubonicon is a place for people to express their passions. Now in its 47th year, the convention has become a haven for local and regional science fiction fans and authors.

Got a parking ticket? An appeals process is available

An expensive parking ticket inside a glaring yellow envelope stuffed under a windshield wiper. It’s an exasperating sight that nearly every student on campus has been confronted with at one point or another. Luckily, if students believe a parking citation is in error, they have the opportunity to request an appeal review through UNM Parking and Transportation Services up to five days after receiving the ticket. After this time the fee will be transferred to the student’s bursar account.

In recent weeks there has been a noticeable increase in the number of reported sexual harassment incidents on campus, which has some begging the question: is UNMPD doing enough to protect its female students? “I think they need to have more patrols,” said Mary Martinez, a junior biology major.

Activists go without for topless equality

It was 95 years ago that American women secured their right to vote. Today, another battle has begun: a campaign for topless equality. About 50 people gathered near the UNM Duck Pond on Sunday to celebrate Go Topless Day, an event that advocates a revision to Albuquerque’s nudity ordinance, which allows men to walk about the city without wearing a shirt, but outlaws the same act for women. Event organizer Andrea Runyan said the demonstrators had one simple goal, which was to promote equality in public toplessness.

Women's soccer: Lobos drop two in opening weekend

There's no tougher way to start the season than what the New Mexico women’s soccer team experienced at the Lobo Invitational this past weekend. The Lobos faced two top-15 teams, including No. 1 in the nation, at their season-opening classic in Florida State and Texas Tech. The Lobos dropped both games, 3-1 on Friday night to the defending national champion Seminoles, and 1-0 Sunday to the No. 15 Red Raiders.

UNM researchers study transforming cultures in developing countries

New jobs are beginning to emerge in developing and underdeveloped countries. Economies are opening up and people are moving to major cities in search of new career opportunities. Agrarian societies are turning into industrial societies. A UNM researcher is examining how these recent changes in socioeconomic opportunities affect the distribution of wealth in China and Bangladesh. “Previously, these societies have been agrarian and most people subsisted in fairly similar ways. Everyone was a farmer and everyone had similar things. But now that the economies are opening up and they are integrating with regional economies, people have different opportunities,” said Siobhán Mattison, assistant professor of evolutionary anthropology.

Women's soccer: Lobos fall to top-ranked Florida State, 3-1

For a moment in the second half, the Lobos were within one goal of the best team in the country. Thirty seconds later, No. 1 Florida State took it away. Claire Lynch’s goal on Florida State midway through the second half electrified the crowd and gave New Mexico a spark, but the Seminoles’ strong offense struck back leading to a 3-1 win in the Lobo Invitational.

Laci Green, 25-year-old sex education activist and YouTube vlogger, is taking down rape culture one college campus at a time.  Green, who recently received her degree from UC Berkeley on rape nature and causes, filled the SUB Ballroom with over a thousand students, staff, and interested persons Thursday night.

Volleyball: Poll projects UNM to finish fifth in MW

New Mexico will play like a team with something to prove this year. Despite limping to the finish line with multiple injuries last year, the Lobos finished among the top four teams in the conference. This year: UNM has been picked to finish fifth. “We have three all-conference players, the most players returning, and two kids on the preseason (All-Mountain West) team,” head coach Jeff Nelson said. “We’re going to play with a big chip on our shoulders and make them play like they’ve got something to prove.”

Office of Equal Opportunity gets new director

Francie Cordova has been appointed as the new director of the Office of Equal Opportunity. Cordova came to UNM after serving as assistant chief counsel for the California Department of State Hospitals, which is the biggest provider of long-term mental health care in the world. In that position, she was responsible for many of the equal opportunity and affirmative action functions within the office.

The University is in the preliminary stages of planning the first major renovations to Johnson Center in 15 years, and officials are asking students to help them out. Kevin Grant Stevenson, strategic planner in the president’s office, said that any eventual designs for renovation to Johnson are grounded almost completely in what students want.

Animation challenge offers $25,000

It’s about time sitting around watching cartoons all day paid off. Netflix bingers, closet cartoon watchers and artists alike now have the opportunity to tap into their inner children and receive a $25,000 award to advance their education thanks to the inaugural “What’s Your Nickfluence?” Animation Challenge. Kids' TV network Nickelodeon is teaming up with nonprofit organization Get Schooled to host an animation film competition for college students aged 17-24.
