Music about finding self

The bearded Seth Woods sits barefoot in front of a record collection four shelves high. He closes his eyes and begins to strum his acoustic guitar. By the time the lyrics of “Many Long Ago” escape his lips, he has seemingly forgotten there are people in the room.

Website offers full degree schedule

A new website allows students to stay on top of their degree completion on the go. The new site called Degree Plans gives students a list of courses necessary to complete a given degree plan in four years as well as a by-semester schedule of those courses. The project started development in May and was released Aug. 15. UNM Associate Provost for Curriculum Greg Heileman, one of the coordinators for the project, said the application involved many different departments.

Health center to request $9.5M more from state

UNM’s Health Sciences Center will have to seek more money from the state Legislature next year. At a meeting held Friday afternoon, the UNM Hospital Board of Directors approved a $9.5 million increase in the HSC’s funding request to the Legislature.

The Obama administration’s proposal for a military strike on Syria has not swayed students at UNM. A protest held at the UNM Bookstore on Friday demonstrated the University community’s skepticism of Obama’s plan.

Pro-life group hosts lecturer

In 2000, Abby Johnson had a surgical abortion. Still a college student at the time, she was afraid that having a baby would ruin her future. When she became pregnant by the same man in 2003, Johnson had an abortion again.

UNM prevails in overtime thriller

EL PASO, Texas – Running back Kasey Carrier scored a game-winning 21-yard run in overtime, leading New Mexico to a 42-35 victory over UTEP Saturday night at the Sun Bowl. Carrier rushed for 291 yards and four touchdowns, including the final score in OT.

UNM wins award for sustainability efforts

A local Sustainable Business Summit recognized UNM with a special Judges’ Award for achievement in sustainability. Mary Clark, sustainability manager at UNM, said there were several categories at the Aug. 29 summit.

Duck Pond turtles baffle officials, charm students

Shelled critters have invaded the Duck Pond and questions remain as to where they came from. Turtles have arrived in the Duck Pond to stay, said Mary Vosevich, director of UNM’s Physical Plant Department, which is in charge of maintenance of the pond.

Committee made smoking zones, vanished

While UNM’s website still lists 12 designated smoking areas on campus, enforcement of the policy has gone null. Robert Burford, student conduct officer at the office of the dean of students, said a nonsmoking committee “that was formed in the past” created the zones to reduce smoking on campus.

$25K prize for business plans

For the ninth year in a row, business-minded UNM students can win up to $25,000 through a campus competition. Students can now register for the annual UNM Business Plan Competition organized by the Anderson School of Management.

All Clayton Mitchem wants is an opportunity to show his skills. On Saturday at UTEP, he’ll get it. On Tuesday UNM football head coach Bob Davie announced that the junior transfer quarterback will start in place of injured sophomore signal-caller Cole Gautsche

PETA branch promotes veganism

Fake chicken corpses rested atop one another in a bin inside a tent near the Student Union Building. Posters of farm animals doused in mud and blood lined the walls, while a baby pig squealed in a documentary playing on a large screen.
