Groups rally for, against ban

Student organizations across UNM are mobilizing to help spread the word on the proposed abortion ban which Albuquerque voters will decide on in less than two weeks. Shaya Rogers, a member of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, a pro-abortion rights group on campus, said her organization started to advocate against the measure about a month ago.

International Week kicks off Monday

UNM students can go global next week. The University’s Global Education Offices, with the help of various other organizations, will launch this year’s International Education Week on Monday. Danielle Gilliam, administrative officer for GEO, said this year’s international week will be a big one.

Absentee voting for undergraduate senator spots begins today and the Team You slate hopes to outwit the other candidates for the sought-after Associated Students of New Mexico seats. Ten student politicians will run with the Team You for ASUNM for this semester’s senate elections.

Contract renegotiations between insurance provider Presbyterian Health Plan and UNM’s Health Sciences Center have left some patients looking for a new primary care provider. PHP members who use UNMH as their primary care, which includes family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics, can continue to see their UNMH providers until Dec. 31.

Judge: Former UNM president granted access to seized property

A Bernalillo court ruled Wednesday morning that former UNM President F. Chris Garcia, who faced charges of prostitution in 2011, should be allowed access to property seized by authorities during investigations relating to the case. Second District Judicial Court Judge Stan Whitaker approved a court order after the confidential hearing that morning. The request for the order was filed by Garcia’s lawyers Robert Gorence and Andrea Harris in October.

At parade, (un)Occupy decries ‘fake borders’

For members of (un)Occupy Albuquerque, the Marigold Parade is something deeper than an annual Mexican tradition. Armed with signs and fake money, (un)Occupy members marched along Isleta Boulevard on Sunday, to protest against the U.S.’s Mexican border policies as part of this year’s Día de Los Muertos celebrations.

Bacon buffs pig out at pork party

New Mexicans love their bacon, and the turnout of nearly 8,000 pork lovers at the Southwest Bacon Fest Saturday demonstrated that nicely. Some vendors were prepared for the large turnout, but others were not, leading to long waits for some booths, especially the beer vendors.

A celebration usually full of rejoice and remembrance of loved ones was riddled with politically influenced floats this weekend. Floats in this year’s Marigold Parade, which took place Sunday, included those from schools such as Del Norte High School, Erne Pyle Middle School and New Mexico International School.

Food philanthropy: Eatery touts communal dining

For one potentially new Albuquerque nonprofit restaurant, what you could pay should correspond to what you get. Food Karma is looking for a potential location in the city. The nonprofit restaurant, which is currently in the planning process, would have a counter service and a donation box, which would allow restaurantgoers to pay what they can for the meal anonymously and judgment-free.

UNM commits to 11K new degrees by 2015

UNM agreed to contribute to an initiative that will further push it to increase graduation rates. The University has agreed to participate in “Mission: Graduate,” which aims to add 60,000 graduates with college degrees and certificates to central New Mexico by 2020, according to a news release.

New Hungarian exchange deal in planning stages

UNM might soon add yet another location to its international exchange opportunities soon. Eszterházy Károly College (EKC), located in Eger, Hungary, and UNM agreed to collaborate to allow students from each university to go exchange at the other, according to a UNM press release.
