Albuquerque Fire Department firefighters respond to a fire at Lambda Chi Alpha, a closed fraternity on 1805 Sigma Chi Road, on Wednesday morning. The department received a call at 9:33 a.m. saying that smoke was going out of a window of a house, according to an Albuquerque Police Department officer on-scene. The fire was contained in one room and no injuries were reported. The cause is currently under investigation. The street between University Boulevard and Yale Boulevard remained closed until 11 a.m.

False alarm goes off at Castetter Hall

After inspecting in Castetter Hall on Wednesday morning, police and firemen has found that the incident was a false alarm. UNM Police Department Operations Lieutenant Trace Peck said the department responded to the incident after getting a call about a possible blaze in the building.

“Joint” Resolution [10]

A bid to make marijuana legal will begin as the New Mexico Legislature opens this week. State Joint Resolution 10 would amend the state constitution to make the sale, consumption and growth of pot legal, said Sen. Jerry Ortiz y Pino, who sponsored the proposal.

Lottery funds at risk this semester

The upcoming state legislative session may determine how much some UNM students pay for school this semester. According to an email sent out by the UNM Financial Aid Office, the New Mexico Higher Education Department believes “current available funds for the Legislative Lottery Scholarship may be insufficient to cover the spring 2014 semester.”

Scholars allowed access to labs

An agreement signed by UNM last week will reduce the red tape between the University and Sandia National Laboratories. University and Sandia administrators on Friday signed the Inter-Institutional Visitor Agreement, which will allow UNM faculty members and certain graduate students to conduct experiments and research while on the national laboratory’s property.

El Centro leader faces contention

Despite an internal fiasco last month, the new director of UNM’s El Centro de la Raza is revving up for the spring semester. Rosa Isela Cervantes, who had her first day in office Jan. 6, said that despite complaints against her appointment from some members of the El Centro community late last year, she is still excited for the semester to begin.

Superior instructors sought

The governor has proposed initiatives that would grant millions to higher education institutions in the state. At a press conference last month, Gov. Susana Martinez announced proposals that include appropriating $7.5 million to the higher education endowment fund for New Mexico universities.

Women's Basketball: Spartans fight to the last

It took a couple of key performances for the New Mexico women’s basketball team to finally put away San Jose State on Saturday. Senior guard Sara Halasz scored 23 points and grabbed 14 boards for her third career double-double and senior forward Deeva Vaughn recorded 21 points and six rebounds to propel UNM to an 80-68 victory over SJSU at The Pit in front of 6,025 fans.

Men’s Basketball: OT thriller results in Lobos’ win at Wyoming

An Alex Kirk block and two Cleveland Thomas free throws helped secure the New Mexico men’s first road win in Mountain West play, a 72-69 overtime victory at Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo. The Lobos (11-3, 2-0 MW) held a 70-69 lead with 14 seconds left when Kirk, UNM’s junior center, blocked a layup attempt by Wyoming’s Riley Grabau.

State Supreme Court approve same-sex marriage

New Mexico became the 17th state in the nation to allow same-sex marriages on Thursday. After months of deliberation, the state Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the state government “is constitutionally required to allow same-gender couples to marry and must extend to them the rights, protections and responsibilities that derive from civil marriage under New Mexico law.”


	New Mexico’s James Rogers works to keep a Notre Dame player away from the ball during their NCAA semifinal game Friday in Philadelphia. The Lobos ended their season with an appearance in the Final Four.

Men's Soccer: Three-year legacy ends at NCAA Final Four

The legacy established by the 2013 New Mexico men’s soccer team extends beyond its NCAA tournament semifinal run, head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. It spans the past three seasons. UNM joined Maryland and Connecticut as the only three teams to reach the NCAA tournament’s third round consecutively over the last three seasons. This year’s trip to the Final Four became the culmination in that string of success, Fishbein said.

Charter school presents award to regents

A charter school associated with UNM presented University regents with a national award on Tuesday. Kathy Sandoval-Snider, director of the Albuquerque Institute for Math and Science (AIMS) at UNM, presented the Blue Ribbon Shield award to the UNM Board of Regents at a meeting.

UNM taking steps to ensure students graduate on time

UNM officials are working to help students graduate on time, while saving the University money. University Provost Chaouki Abdallah said it would cost the University about $50,000 to graduate a student who takes the minimum 128 total credit hours within four years. But for a student who graduates after six years, it costs UNM about $91,000 to produce a degree.

Men's Soccer: UNM soccer team heads to semis

If defense wins championships, as the old adage goes, then the other three teams in the NCAA College Cup better watch out. New Mexico hasn’t given up a goal this tournament. The defense came through yet again for head coach Jeremy Fishbein’s squad, which secured a spot among the four remaining teams in college soccer with Saturday night’s 1-0 victory over Washington in the Elite Eight. “I couldn’t be prouder of our team,” Fishbein said.

HSC divisions to hit financial goals

Four months into fiscal year 2014, UNM’s consolidated Health Sciences Center divisions have earned $4 million dollars more than they spent, combined. According to a report presented by HSC administrators in a UNM Board of Hospital Directors meeting on Friday, HSC’s divisions brought in a total of about $520 million by the end of October
