UNM offers more funds for more scholars

The number of national scholars at UNM has more than doubled each year since 2007, according to the UNM Admissions Office.There are 77 national scholars enrolled at UNM, which is up from 38 in 2008 and 14 in 2007. “National scholars” is an umbrella term that covers National Merit Scholars, National Hispanic Recognition Scholars, National Achievement Scholars and National American Indian Scholars.

The Cube mixes modern setting, classic cuisine

To the untrained palate, barbecue is barbecue. But not at The Cube on Central Avenue. The restaurant specializes in Memphis, Tenn.-style barbecue, and also offers other American-style food and hot dogs. Owner Manny Aka said he wanted to give UNM students another option for authentic barbecue. The difference between Memphis-style barbecue and other styles, such as Texas-style barbecue, is the meat, Aka said.

Chilean native Sol Aravena created Muza, a group with Latin and electronic sounds. The band will perform at QBar in Hotel Albuquerque on Friday at 8 p.m.

Sol Aravena, 37-year-old Chilean and creator of Muza, just moved to Taos to work with Petroglyph Records. Aravena traveled to New Mexico without her original Chilean musicians, but she has teamed up with two musicians from Taos to soothe ears all over the Southwest.

Party Patrol polices tailgate

The UNM football team has yet to score an offensive touchdown after their 44-10 loss at the hands of Tulsa on Saturday at University Stadium. “It’s been a long time since I went two games without scoring a touchdown,” head coach Mike Locksley said.

Regents OK West Side health clinic

The UNM Finance and Facilities Committee approved a $5.5 million health clinic on Albuquerque’s West Side during their meeting Friday. The committee, chaired by Don Chalmers, also approved funding requests for several major additions to the UNM Hospital. The committee discussed the need for a new health care facility at Central Avenue and Unser Boulevard to accommodate the residents in the nearby neighborhood.

The administrative, editorial and production departments of UNM Press will move from 1312 Basehart Drive to 1717 Roma Ave. on main campus. Some employees in the press’ warehouse department fear they will be laid off as administrators consider outsourcing.

Lobos look to weather the Hurricane

There’s a hurricane warning this Saturday in Albuquerque. Early reports indicate the eye of the storm is headed straight for University Stadium. UNM will face Tulsa in its home-opener, but head coach Mike Locksley doesn’t want his team looking for vengeance from last year’s 56-14 beat down at the hands of the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane, said linebacker Clint McPeek. “We would like to redeem ourselves,” he said.

ASUNM balks at Veterans Day vote

ASUNM sent a resolution that would allow the UNM community to take Veterans Day off back to committee during its first meeting Wednesday. Sixteen senators voted in favor of sending the vote back and four voted against.The same resolution passed during the Graduate and Professional Student Association meeting Saturday.

COSAP: No DUI checkpoint list

A campuswide e-mail sent out Aug. 27 gave some students the impression that the Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention would be disclosing the locations of DUI checkpoints. “As a service to everyone, COSAP will be sending you notices of upcoming checkpoints throughout the year,” the e-mail stated. Jill Anne Yeagley, COSAP program manager, said the message was misinterpreted. “The e-mail in question wasn’t a lot different from e-mails we have previously sent to students, so I was surprised that it would be interpreted to mean we were going to provide checkpoint locations,” Yeagley said in a follow-up e-mail the next day.
