Victim possibly attacked for phone

UNMPD officers say they may have found a motive in the stabbing of a UNM student Monday night on campus: The assailant allegedly slashed the woman’s throat for her cell phone. The victim told UNMPD officers that her attacker came up from behind her as she was talking on her phone, a BlackBerry, and slashed her neck while he snatched the device. The victim, a UNM student and employee, is reportedly in satisfactory condition at UNM Hospital, according to UNMPD spokesman Robert Haarhues.

Suspected stabber at large around UNM

A woman claiming to have been stabbed ran into a classroom in the Anthropology Building around 7:55 p.m., according to several witnesses who were in the classroom. Student Mike Johnson, who was visibly shaken, said a woman ran into his music appreciation class clutching her throat and asking for help. “I set my set stuff down and this poor lady walks in.


	Johnny smokes his cigarettes down to a smoldering filter. Over the years, this has turned his fingertips black.

The face of homelessness

Some quick calculations done my Freshman year showed me that if I gave 50 cents to everyone who asked for change, I would quickly go broke. In three years of living here, it struck me that Albuquerque seems to have a much larger homeless population than other cities.

Congressman Martin Heinrich was not on campus Friday to speak. He was there to listen. Heinrich met with student veterans and representatives of the UNM Veterans Resource Center to gather information on scholarship programs for Veterans.

ASUNM: Athletics is worth the money

In a twist away from the graduate students’ special election, the ASUNM Senate resolved nearly the opposite of everything the graduate student body voted on pertaining to athletics. In a 19-0 decision Wednesday, the undergraduate student Senate voted to support student athletes, Athletics Director Paul Krebs and the department as a whole.


	Cars stream by the red light camera mounted at the intersection of San Mateo and Montgomery Boulevards on Tuesday evening. UNM is in the process of negotiating a study that would determine the viability of these cameras in Albuquerque intersections.

Studying the efficiency of red-light cameras

If you’ve ever accidentally coasted through a yellow light below a red-light camera, the anxiety you once felt might be a thing of the past. Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry is negotiating the terms of a contract with the UNM Institute for Social Research to test whether the cameras actually make Albuquerque’s streets safer. Berry will decide whether to remove the cameras based on the ISR study, said T.J.

When the College of Education building opens, it might just be a LEED leader. The building — across from Hokona Hall — will be open for classes in the fall semester, and its use of energy efficient features may earn it a rating of platinum in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system by the U.S.

Santa Ana evacuated after early-morning fire

First-floor residents of Santa Ana Hall awoke at 4 a.m. Tuesday to screaming fire alarms and billowing smoke. A bulletin board on the east end of the first floor caught on fire, according to UNMPD spokesman Robert Haarhues.

Projected allocations for research grants

UNM will receive more than $37 million in federal stimulus funding for research initiatives. The money, which came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is split between main campus and the Health Sciences Center.

Schmidly to hire unpaid advisers

President Schmidly announced today the creation of a team of advisers who aim to help the administration consolidate its budget during times of economic hardship. The “President’s Strategic Advisory Team” will be made up of unpaid students, staff and faculty.

SFRB cuts fees from Athletics 2.2%

After contentious debate, the Student Fee Review Board decided to slightly cut Athletics funding. According to the unofficial SFRB worksheet, 2.2 percent of last year’s funding is being cut — more than $33,000, or $2.32 per full-time student.

16-hour meeting held over $10 student fee hike

The Student Fee Review Board has recommended raising student fees by a little over $10 a year for full-time students. After more than 16 hours holed up in a basement classroom in George Pearl Hall this weekend, the Board emphasized fiscal responsibility when considering requests totaling more than $11 million in hopes of minimizing, and even eliminating, a student fee increase. Every program requesting student fees asked for increased funding over last year — a total requested increase of $1.5 million — and four groups asked for almost $200,000 in new money.


	Don Schrader eats mostly fresh vegetables because he said cooked food is unhealthy for the body. In the jars to the left, he mixed vegetables and other food together to create his morning smoothie. In an entire year he said he spent little more than $1,000 on food.

Beloved nudist forced to move

Don Schrader’s apartment is every bit as unique as he is. The 12-by-14-foot apartment, which he will vacate at the end of February, displays Schrader’s history in wall-to-ceiling decoration of pictures from his life, notes on his methodologies, cards from friends and published letters to the Weekly Alibi. The apartment complex where Schrader lives, on Silver Avenue, is being remodeled and sold by the owners.

ASUNM resolution cites Athletics' accomplishments

On the heels of a GPSA special election addressing UNM Athletics, members of the undergraduate governing body weighed in, supporting a different view. The ASUNM Steering and Rules Committee passed a resolution 3-1 giving support to almost everyone in the Athletics Department – leaving out, but not condemning, Athletics Director Paul Krebs and UNM coaches.
