Top cyclists overlooked

In March, Carolyn Donnelly read about the accounts of the UNM women’s basketball team’s attempt to earn the first team national championship in school history and thought it was wrong. She knew of one program that had competed under the University’s umbrella and earned a team championship — the Lobo Cycling Club.

Janita to jazz up Albuquerque

When Scandinavian-born singer-songwriter Janita left her native Finland for New York City five years ago at the age of 17, she was thinking vacation. “When I came here, I thought it would be for two weeks,” Janita said from her Big Apple home. “When I told everyone I was moving here, I didn’t think I would be staying very long.” Now, Janita is looking to expand her career with her first American release, I’ll Be Fine, on the Carport Music Imprint. She has had top-10 hits and Grammy awards in both Finland and Asia since her career began at the age of 13. But she admits it was tough to expand in the fishbowl-like confines of Finland.

Old political labels don’t apply

Vermont Sen. James Jeffords’ defection from the Republican Party highlights the selfishness of the Bush administration. The Republican Party now faces a dilemma that could break its infamous reputation of running a tight ship that always votes the party line. The party must decide whether making money is more important than caring for our future.

Thriller unveils hidden envy

Sometimes even the most normal families are hiding the darkest feelings inside. Fred Leebron’s psychological thriller “Six Figures” is the embodiment of twisting a knife inside and ripping the faáade of ordinary lives to physical and metaphoric shreds.

Lobo goes to Major League

Chris Cooper’s baseball journey has mimicked a journeyman minor leaguer’s in many ways. His ventures have placed him in Pittsburgh, Pa.; Bowie, Md.; Georgetown, Del.; and finally Albuquerque, and that’s only during his high school and college days. Now, Cooper’s traveling show hits the big time: Major League Baseball.

Cousins top tree competition

Chris Blea knealt on the ground and looked up in silence as his cousin, Martin Abeyta, ripped at ropes — trying to secure himself to tree limbs. Abeyta jumped and wrapped his arms around branches. Friends and fellow climbers yelled, “C’mon, get in there, push it!”

‘Animal’ fails to meet comedic expectations

The new movie, “Animal,” starring Rob Schneider and “Survivor’s” Colleen Haskell takes a bizarre look at the sexual desires of animals. Rob Schneider stars as Marvin Mange, a good-hearted guy who has an incredible amount of bad luck, as his movie characters usually do. Marvin’s dream is to become a police officer like his father, but he just can’t seem to get it right.

Network problems fixed, NT servers were hacked

Thank you for your coverage on the recent UNM Network problems. The intermittent connection and slowdown problems were corrected May 31. The situation was caused by a combination of network upgrade problems, incompatibility issues between some UNM department-specific equipment and UNM Network devices and another series of denial-of-service attacks, which were coincidental and compounded the other two problems.

Web Exclusive: Jeffords right to stand up to bullies

I could not be more proud of Senator Jeffords of Vermont. It is encouraging to know that independent, thoughtful people exist in Washington who place the needs of their country and constituents ahead of the needs of the Republican or Democratic Parties.

Two Lobos take game overseas

UNM men’s basketball program has had a busy week, with the departure of one player and a departure of sorts for two others. Sophomore guard Ruben Douglas was invited to try out for the United States World University Games team in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 1-3. The games are a multi-sport event and are held every two years. Tryouts were open to men between the ages of 17-28 who have, within the last year, been a student at a college or university.
