As a band, Sonic Youth formed in 1981. As a phenomenon, Sonic Youth has always seemed to be there; its influence lingering in the work of nearly every college, punk, grunge or art rock band since its 1988 breakthrough, Daydream Nation. In its 21-year history, the band has weathered record label scuffles, fan accusations of “selling out” and an array of departed and added band members.
“Mr. Deeds” may have scored big at the box office, taking the number one spot over the weekend — but is it worthy of such success? “Mr. Deeds” is a funny, if not completely brainless, remake of the 1936 Frank Capra film, “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.” In this reincarnation, “Mr.
Nashville Pussy — the name screams rock ‘n’ roll. And it should, since the band got it from a stage rap on one of Ted Nugent’s ’70s live albums. Actually, it screams raunch ‘n’ roll, which is the best description of the group’s metallic music — from its 1996 debut Let Them Eat Pussy up to its most recent release, Say Something Nasty.
Editor, Sometimes I wonder what UNM’s priorities are. I see tuition go up year after year, so I suspect that students are not the priority. Faculty is not given commensurate salaries, and the rest of the staff must fight like hell to be treated as equals.
The Access to Essential Medicines Expo, sponsored by Doctors Without Borders, visited UNM last week trying to raise awareness of the crisis people living in developing countries without adequate medical care face. The walkway outside the UNM Bookstore was scattered with flytraps; attached were information cards about the parasites associated with the tsetse fly and other statistics.
UNM painter Juliet Wing says that the title for her new exhibition, "Tale of an Eternity," came directly out of a dream she had. That particular dream has played a substantial role in the development of Wing's autobiographical artwork over the past year and a half.
During the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education’s two-day retreat last weekend, the group addressed several issues, including revising the state funding model used to establish budgets for higher education institutions. The commission, which serves as the coordinating board that provides policy recommendations to the state legislature, also addressed distance learning initiatives and improved communication between member constituents.
Editor, The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled school vouchers constitutional. Now the state Legislature has no excuse for pouring more money into the pit that our public schools have become. Why is it that government is so willing to spend endless amounts of money on programs that no longer live up to expectation? It’s the same old mentality; if it’s broke, throw more money at it.

In 2003, the Lobos have the chance to use the power of The Pit all the way to the Women's NCAA Final Four at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga. The NCAA announced Monday that University Arena was chosen to host the first- and second-round games of the Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament on either March 22 and 24 or March 23 and 25.
The coaching carousel at UNM spun again Monday with the announcement of men’s soccer coach Klaus Weber’s retirement, effective Aug. 31. UNM associate athletics director Janice Ruggiero said the University would begin a coaching search immediately. Weber, 59, began his coaching career at UNM as head coach of the nordic ski team in 1975.
UNM faculty and students played a key role in the Supreme Court’s recent decision to bar the execution of mentally retarded inmates. UNM law professor James Ellis was a major component in the legal victory. He assisted in preparing the legal brief and delivered the oral argument before the Supreme Court Justices.

Senior tennis player Courtney Choate was one of 15 student-athletes named to the Verizon Academic All-American at-large team on June 13. The group comprises female student-athletes competing in tennis, swimming, golf, rifle, skiing, crew and gymnastics. Choate graduated from UNM in May with a degree in marketing and a 4.03 GPA.
The American Nurses Association's prediction that up to 40 percent of the nursing workforce will retire after 2010 is forcing the UNM College of Nursing to seek additional legislative funding to increase enrollment.
