Movie serves N.M. waitresses

The Santa Fe Film Festival sponsored a special premiere of "American Waitress, New Mexico" by Backseat Productions, Saturday at the Guild Cinema. Audience members waited in lines that stretched down the block for the film's anticipated opening. The screening was a benefit to raise funds for and promote the Santa Fe Film Festival.

Conceptions makes a literary comeback

A year ago, the production, support and existence of Conceptions Southwest was begging for help because it was about to drown. What could they do, rip up all of the back copies of Conceptions, make some type of floatation device with the remnants and pray to high hell that one of the only artistic/literary collections at UNM would be able to doggie paddle it back to safety?

WEB EXCLUSIVE: New Danzig album a rebellion against popular metal

Misfits/Samhain founder Glenn Danzig ripped through a heavyweight set of songs at Albuquerque’s Midnight Rodeo Sunday, June 2nd. The crowd revved up at the sounds of familiar songs like “Mother,” “Twist of Cain” and “Under Her Black Wings,” and to a lesser extent at cuts from the just-released “777: I Luciferi,” Danzig’s seventh solo release.

Master's degree offered to study optical science Beginning in the fall semester, a new master's degree program in optical science and engineering will be available to students. Students will have a choice of three areas of emphasis: thesis, course and internship-based studies.

Move over soft drink companies — Pepsi's here to stay at UNM. Once again, profit rears its pointy little head as our illustrious University has awarded the Pepsi Bottling Group an eight-year contract that will pay UNM about $1 million yearly and give exclusive bottled and fountain drink sales rights to the soft drink company.

Go climb a tree

Roberto Contreras, 19, of Southwest Tree Specialists, competes in the "Work Climb" during the Third Annual New Mexico State Tree Climbing Championships Saturday at Taylor Park. The event was co-sponsored by the UNM Physical Plant Department and featured five scored events. Competitors vied for a $500 chainsaw, a cash prize and the chance to represent New Mexico at the regional competition in Denver, Colo., June 15.

UNM center fielder Matt Young, was named to the freshmen All-American team by Collegiate Baseball magazine Wednesday. He was also was a first-team Mountain West Conference pick. Freshman third baseman Josh Mader was named to the honorable mention team.

Artists join together to preserve the land

The 3 Sided Hole existed from May 23-27 on a privately owned plot of land about one hour west of Albuquerque, overlooking the Rio Puerco Valley. Artists, musicians, poets and performers gathered to celebrate the building of a strong creative arts community and to preserve and restore the landscape of New Mexico.
