The UNM campus played host to a number of popular names in the film industry last week as filming began on campus of the Paramount Pictures psychological thriller "Suspect Zero." The movie will star Aaron Eckhart, from "Erin Brokovich," Sir Ben Kingsley, who received an Academy Award for his work in "Ghandi" and Carrie-Anne Moss, who played Trinity in "The Matrix.

Lobos ‘no-names’ aim for respect

For some college football programs, not having a solid starter at a position is seen as a sign of instability. Not so at UNM — particularly on defense. “Any position that has a lot of competition and has quality players, I don’t think that’s a problem spot at all,” head coach Rocky Long said recently.

LETTER: Pledge defies Constitution

Editor, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” (1st Amendment to the Constitution). This is where separation of church and state is clearly addressed in the Constitution. If it is required that the pledge of allegiance be recited by certain groups in current form then it clearly violates “no law respecting the establishment of religion.

The assailant, 53-year-old Harris Frangos, was shot and killed by UNMPD and APD officers.

LETTER: PET scanner a boon

Editor, Thank you for reporting on UNM’s recent acquisition of a PET scanner and its unique ability to image metabolic patterns. Our Health Science Center’s current brochure highlighting research lists their Diabetes Center as funded the most. In light of this, it is hoped that they will look for interesting ways in which PET can be applied to diabetes, which is a metabolic disease.

EDITORIAL: Lobo doesn't shelter campus from reality

Yes, I am a woman. I also am a first-generation Hispanic-American. I also am an editor. In that order. My mother is part of a generation of women who stood in picket lines to advocate for equality for women. She grew up with the stigma of being not only a woman, but a Latina in 1960s New York City.

Band continues avant-garde jaunt

Dredg treads familiar and similarly fascinating ground with its second major-label release El Cielo. Following in the footsteps of the heavily lauded major-label debut of Leitmotif, Dredg continue upon the avant-garde concept album rock path. El Cielo yields such lines as “watch clouds peek over the tallest mountain tops, cuz they unveil honest opinions about the stars” from the album’s real opener “Same Ol’ Road”.

LETTER: Ads do not represent UNM in positive light

Editor, I am writing to express my dismay and disappointment at the full-page TD’s Showclub ad in the July 25 to Aug. 11 Daily Lobo. I really thought that as an institution of higher education, UNM would refuse to participate in this type of degradation and objectification of women.

Film adaptation collects dust

The problem with reviewing local cinema is that you worry that Billy Garberina might hunt you down and kick your ass for giving him a bad review. Who is Billy Garberina? He is the writer, co-director, producer and star of the entirely locally made full-length feature: “Collecting Rooftops.

‘Signs’ nearly a tour de force

Ever felt a growing sense of dread from something as simple as watching a man stare into a darkened cornfield? If you see “Signs” — written, directed and produced by M. Night Shyamalan — you might. Shyamalan, director of “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable,” follows a kind of Hitchcock-esque methodology in “Signs.

LETTER: Lobo cartoon is blatantly racist

Editor, I am writing regarding the political cartoon in your July 25 edition of the Daily Lobo. This is on page 4, in your “Opinion” section. I am frankly disgusted and appalled at this cartoon, depicting two Middle Eastern men, one saying to the other “You ever wonder why Israelis strap their bombs to jets instead of people?” while the other man has a bomb strapped to his back.

LETTER: Strip club ads an insult to women and UNM

Editor, Has our school opened a new department for strip clubs such as TD’s and Fantasy World, so that they can advertise on an entire page of the Daily Lobo and welcome us back to school? Is this an attractive way to adorn the cover page of a university newspaper that people look at as a hallmark of what is going on? Are we so down in money and funding Daily Lobos that we are only one step away from the out-loud porn ads? These ads keep the money going, true, but what about the ethics — or is that an old subject and belongs to the past? I believe being supported by the above mentioned clubs and printing their ads consistently in the Daily Lobo is not only an insult to all the women at UNM, but also defies the purpose of a university as an advocate of an educational organization.

Flaming Lips spits out new serene masterpiece

Everyone’s doing retro pop these days. The ’60s are long gone, but pop from that era is all over the place. But left out of that is psychedelic pop — that LSD-fueled sub-genre that Pink Floyd started out in before building The Wall. Leave it to The Flaming Lips to make sure that psychedelic pop is represented.
