Intramural sports offer a common ground to gather

UNM's intramural sports offer students, staff and faculty a variety of ways to get out and compete among their peers, provides a way of relieving stress and adds to a person's overall college experience. "It provides a common ground for people to gather, and offers them ways to connect in ways not possible through the everyday school life," said Fred Perez, director of UNM's Recreational Services.

UNM D back to form with total domination

The UNM defensive squad showed just how good it can be in it 23-0 shut out of Baylor University Saturday. The Lobos D dominated, wreaking havoc on the Bears' offense all night. Good defense is something that UNM fans have gotten used to over the past couple of years, but that had not been the case in the first three games this season.

PASSPORT TO UNM: UNM offers Child Care Center

UNM's Child Care Center is expanding to offer more support to students with families - something that many students may not even know about. Elena Aguirre, the center's director, said the program is so vital to the UNM community that she doesn't understand why more students don't know about it.

Department upgrades University computers

Anyone who uses e-mail or the Internet, receives a paycheck, issues grades or even hires someone, whether they know it, is using one key department at UNM - the Computer and Information Resources and Technology Department. The department, more commonly known among computer users as CIRT, is looking at its current computer systems and capabilities and is using state-of-the-art technology to make on-campus computers more manageable and user-friendly.

Lobos find D, lose Wright

UNM's 23-0 demolition of Baylor University Saturday night turned out to be a game of lost and found. The Lobos found its ferocious, top-20 defense, which held the Bears to 107 yards total offense, recorded four sacks, forced two fumbles.

Ice Wolves gear up for sixth UNM season

Hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. So it's no surprise that UNM has a hockey team of its own. The UNM Ice Wolves enter their sixth year of existence this year. A club team, the Ice Wolves are not NCAA-sanctioned, nor does the UNM Athletic Department support them.

Albuquerque not yet hit by Nile upsurge

Although the disease has only been spotted in horses far away from Albuquerque, UNM and city officials are vigilantly watching for conditions that may cause the virus to spring up here.

Marching Band

Win or lose, there is always a common denominator at Lobo football home games - the UNM Spirit Marching Band. M. Miller Asbill, the associate director of bands, is in his second year as director of the marching band. The band will perform four separate programs this year, "Music of the 90's," which has been featured at the first two games this year, a Latin-themed show, a show based on movie theme songs and a Motown-themed performance.

Men's golf team takes top honors at UNM Tucker Invitational

Staff Report For the second year in a row, the UNM men's golf team won its own William H. Tucker Intercollegiate tournament. Senior Michael Letzig won individual honors, shooting a final round 2-under on his way to 9-under par for the tournament. Letzig the first Lobo to win the individual title since Doug LaBelle tied for top honors in 1997.

Men's cross country team cruises, women take second

Staff Report The UNM men's and women's cross country teams continued their success this weekend in a triumphant return to the UNM North Golf Course for the Lobo Invitational. The Lobo men won its second consecutive tournament while cruising to 21-point victory over second place Air Force Academy.

Athletes of the Week

Jacquelyne Gallegos and the UNM Men's soccer team are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo athletes of the week. Gallegos came in second place at this weekend's Lobo Invitational at the UNM North Golf Course. The sophomore blazed through the 6,000 meter course in 22 minutes and 45 seconds, helped propel the Lobos into second place.
