COLUMN: Saudi Arabia backs disparity, terrorism

by Mike Still Daily Collegian U-Wire We were quite young during Operation Desert Storm. Most undergraduates at Penn State were between first and fifth grade during our first major foray into Iraq, and it all seemed pretty simple at the time. As a fourth grader, I remember looking at pictures of Saddam and thinking to myself, "That jerk!" Asked to name the three worst people in history, I would likely have said Adolf Hitler, the Emperor from the "Star Wars" trilogy and Saddam Hussein.

Millea, UNM defense dominate Rebels

by Michael Beniash Daily Lobo Under the bright lights of Las Vegas, senior back-up quarterback Justin Millea and the Lobos' defense upset the University of Nevada at Las Vegas 25-16 Saturday, spoiling the Rebels' homecoming. Millea, filling in for injured junior quarterback Casey Kelly, displayed avid running skills in his first-ever start at quarterback for UNM.

Tennis scores Balloon Fiesta Invite sweep

Staff Report UNM senior Bart Scott led an impressive showing as the Lobo men's tennis team swept the singles and doubles championships at the Balloon Fiesta Invitational this weekend at the Lobo Tennis Club. Scott dominated singles competition sweeping into the finals without losing a set.

MWC games the pits for volleyball

The UNM Volleyball team found the switch from Johnson Center to University Arena to be the pits this weekend, losing Mountain West Conference matches to the University of Wyoming 3-1 Friday and Colorado State University 3-1 Saturday. Wyoming 3, UNM 1 The Lobos, who went without starting outside hitter Anna Reines, played the Cowgirls close, but weren't able to counter Wyoming's big hitters, junior Michele Rauter and sophomore Sara Maytorena.

N.M.'s economic condition expected to keep dwindling

Staff Report The UNM women's soccer team swept its road trip this weekend, shutting out Mountain West Conference foes San Diego State University and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Winters recorded her third shutout in a row - her sixth of the year.

LETTER: Scholarship funds in need of new direction

Editor, We read with interest your Oct. 1 story regarding the N.M. Commission of Higher Education study that purports to rebut our research findings. Our research, which was published as part of the Harvard study on merit-based programs like New Mexico's lottery scholarship, shows that the rate at which New Mexico high school graduates enroll in college has not been altered by the lottery scholarship.
