Errors earn Lobos a loss in overtime

The University of New Mexico football team saw its chances of making a bowl game this year all but slip away with a 45-44 loss to Utah State University on Saturday. A combination of mental and physical errors doomed the Lobos in what might be the most disappointing loss of the season.

Athletes of the week

UNM running back DonTrell Moore and the women's soccer defensive unit are this week's Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Moore had the best performance of his career on Saturday against Utah State in a 45-44 loss to the Aggies. The freshman had 166 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns, becoming the first UNM freshman to top the 100-yard rushing mark.

Ford recognizes UNM American Indians

Staff Report Three UNM undergraduate American Indian students have been selected to be recipients of the Ford Motor Company/American Indian College Fund Corporate scholarship, a $5,000 award for the fall semester only bestowed upon 12 recipients nationwide.

Homecoming ushers in UNM soccer teams

Homecoming and American football go together like Angels and Rally Monkeys. F£tbol, or soccer if you prefer, and Homecoming usually do not. But this year UNM is including soccer as part of its "Homecoming on the Range" celebrations this week. The men's and women's soccer teams take on teams from the Air Force Academy Friday night as part of homecoming festivities.

University throws a party for Garcia

UNM community members expressed their positive sentiments about new University President Chris Garcia during a welcoming party at University House Friday. The event, which served as an official opportunity for the University community to meet Garcia, UNM's 17th president, featured several speakers throughout of the afternoon, including Garcia himself who emphasized his roots in Albuquerque and at UNM.

Hopeful royalty raise funds for foundation

Students running for UNM's 2002 Homecoming Court took time out of their busy schedules last week to partner with the New Mexico Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to raise money for national Cystic Fibrosis Week. The students in contention for the title of Homecoming king and queen sold "roses" for $10 as part of the extensive community service that accompanies the title of Homecoming representative for UNM.

Lobos look to beat Utah Utes for Homecoming

This week is supposed to be full of college tradition. It's our chance as students to choose a king and queen to represent the University of New Mexico. Yes folks, Homecoming week is upon us and one thing that spells is football. I know a lot of us still have a bitter taste in our mouths from Saturday's disappointing loss to Utah State, but this is a chance for the student body to put aside those petty feelings and welcome home our football team.

Volleyball team loses MWC road matches to Rebels, Aztecs

Staff Report The UNM volleyball team found the road to be unkind again this weekend, losing matches to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and San Diego State University in Mountain West Conference play. The losses drop the Lobos to 6-14 overall, 1-6 in the MWC.

Soccer success on sunday

by Tony Niklinski Daily Lobo The UNM men's and women's soccer teams exited Sunday with solid performances, but different outcomes. The Lobo men opened Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with a win over San Diego State University while the women salvaged its weekend Mountain West Conference set with a tie versus the nationally ranked University of Utah.

The people rose in protest, shouting, "No blood for oil!" The tactic was quickly changed and war was from then on out about good and evil.

Lobos to face USU in their final non-conference game

The resurgent UNM football team plays its final non-conference game Saturday against Utah State University in Logan, Utah. The Div. I Independent Aggies (1-5) have only beaten Division I-AA Idaho State University this year. USU lost its first four games against Division-I teams by a total of 178-61.

UNM stumbles and falls to BYU

The UNM women's soccer team fell to Brigham Young University 3-2 on Thursday night. The Cougars scored with less than five minutes left in the game lifting them to a victory and a 3-0 start in the Mountain West Conference. Freshman midfielder Brooke Bowman took a pass from Jeni Viernes and beat Lobo goalkeeper Kristen Winters for the game-winning goal.

LETTER: Smoking on campus an unnecessary risk for all

Editor, We are blessed in this country to have many rights and freedoms. We can worship how we wish, we can say what we want, we can vote for who we desire. However, one of these fundamental rights is not, "the right to diminish the health of others because it is fun.

LETTER: Next week brings with it Homecoming action

Editor, It seems like many students at UNM complain about a lack of things to do on campus. Well, guess what . . . problem solved! Next week is Homecoming. The ASUNM Homecoming Committee has been hard at work planning a plethora of activities. This year, the committee has done an excellent job to reach out to more students on campus in order to increase participation.
