Popular pub to get new look, life

Many at UNM may not have noticed the quiet closure of Sprockets Pub, a bar across Central Avenue from UNM last summer. However, many have surely noticed the current gutting of the former popular student bar at 2216 Central Ave. SE. The location, which was the Fat Chance Bar & Grill before being rechristened Sprockets, is now being converted into a new bar and restaurant that has not yet been named.

Red Earth's sound a 'tribal stew'

Red Earth - Ira Wilson (voice/guitar) and Jeff Duneman (drums) responding to an e-mail interview. 1) Describe your sound. It's "Tribal Stew." Imagine Fishbone, Metallica, Bob Marley, The Meters, Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi, Johnny Cash, Spook & the Guay, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Reverend Horton Heat, XIT, James Brown and Sly Stone mashed together by some mutton-eating rez kid who became a world-traveler, speaking Portuguese and Indin' together in a strange but damn tasty jambalaya.

Students urged to take early voting option

Bernalillo County Clerk Mary Herrera said the best way to make sure the students' voice is heard in the Nov. 5 election is to get out and use the early voting option. Herrera said she has been encouraging all voters to take advantage of early voting to help prevent long lines from forming on election day, which may be longer than usual because of the large number of items on the ballot.

COLUMN: Pumpkins quirky, interesting

by Ben Everett Columbia Daily Spectator U-Wire I tried free-associating on the word "pumpkin" this morning, and came up with the following: necromancy, lust, good clean fun, muffins. Weird. But also fitting - pumpkins are strange things. After all, what other fruit takes the pan-American spotlight only two days every year, first as a festive lantern, then as a festive pie? To boot, pumpkins tend to pop up in fairy tales, transmogrified into bulbous carriages or blown up to the size of Volkswagens.

LETTER: Lobo treats travelers graciously for article

Editor, I would like to thank Clay Holtzman and photographer Lewis Jacobs for the excellent article "World Travelers visit UNM," which appeared in the in the Oct. 23 edition of the Daily Lobo. Their gracious treatment of these foreign guests was gratifying and their patience in conducting a careful, in-depth interview, in spite of the challenges of working with an amateur interpreter (me), produced a favorable impression on the visitors and a complete and accurate report on their journey around the world.

Jazz master struts his stuff

by Dustin Habermann Daily Lobo Wayne Shorter will hand you your own ass when he's nice and done with it. Which is a rather crude way of saying that Shorter is nothing short of a breathing legend. He's played with an exhaustive list of jazz artists, who should be required listening in any music appreciation class, including Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, among others.

COLUMN: Ballistic fingerprints faulty

Terror inspires faith even in the most flawed of plans. With the yet-to-be-named sniper lurking around our nation's capital, riddling innocent bystanders with bullets, anxiety is aroused and solutions are demanded. In times of crisis, fear and paranoia are louder than reason.

It's back - the Reptilian Lounge, that wacky, kooky and otherwise bizarre event that has made the Tricklock Theatre an Albuquerque staple for late-night entertainment since 1995. What is the Reptilian Lounge, you ask? It's only Albuquerque's longest running and most popular variety show.
