Arthur Simoni | October 29by Arthur Simoni Daily Lobo A seemingly innocent and informative lecture about the current crisis in Venezuela sponsored by the Student Organization for Latin American Studies erupted into a heated debate Thursday night at Dane Smith Hall. Charles Hardy, a former Catholic priest and missionary who has lived in Venezuela for 17 years, presented his lecture, "Crisis in Venezuela; Populist Hugo Chavez Faces off Against the Nation's Elite" and gave his viewpoints of the current political situation and an attempted April 12 coup.
Water Resources Program to recruit more minorities

Lobos tear down Utes 42-35

And celebrating Lobo fans brought down a goalpost. UNM (4-5, 2-1 MWC) used big plays to stay in the game, then used its misdirection offense and staunch defense to dispatch the Utes (2-6, 0-4) and stay in the MWC bowl hunt.
Statewide project awards local bar
Ryan Floersheim | October 28Compelled to reward an action it viewed as "honorable," a UNM-affiliated group has given an award, complete with honorary ceremony, to Brewster's Pub and one of its employees for refusing a pregnant woman entry to the bar Oct. 5. The Statewide Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Prevention Project, a division of UNM's Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addictions, or more commonly known as CASAA, awarded Brewster's the special plaque for its actions to "set a precedent for a bar taking the next step in reducing the chances of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome," according to project organizers.
UNM goes from defenseless to dominant by getting physical

In the first half, the Lobos defense looked like a block of Swiss cheese. On the Utes first offensive play, Utah receiver Josh Lyman went 73 yards untouched on a screen pass to the right side and all the way into the end zone for a quick 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
Athletes of the Week
October 28UNM quarterback Casey Kelly and tennis player Maja Kovacek are this week's Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Kelly led the Lobos to a much-needed 42-35 victory over Utah. He completed 11 of 23 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns including an 80-yard strike to wide receiver Dwight Counter.
Women's soccer splits final two to end season

The story, "Montoya Ranch," produced by independent producer Joe Gardner Wessely, was conceived by the Quivira Coalition, a nonprofit organization created to bring ranchers, environmentalists, public land managers and the public together to look at ways to manage and provide good stewardship of ranch lands.
