COLUMN: Society too sensitive today

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo Columnist At first glance it might not appear that I and Terrel Owens, the premier wide receiver for San Francisco, have much in common besides a connection - as fan and player - with the 49ers. But watching any number of sports pundits chastising him for pulling a pen out of his sock after a touchdown and autographing and handing the ball to a fan, I realized that I also have been constantly on the receiving end of such hyper-seriousness and heard that inevitable phrase of the stuffed-shirts: inappropriate behavior.

LETTER: Bush memorial visit simply hypocritical

Editor, I hope the irony of Bush's visit to the Vietnam War Memorial on Monday was not lost. This from a man whose family connections let him enlist in the Texas Air National Guard ahead of an 18-month waiting list of those hoping to avoid the war. This from a man who then honored this commitment by simply not showing up, like it was a summer job, and was never prosecuted for being AWOL.

by Marisa Demarco Daily Lobo Eirik Ott, a.k.a. Big Poppa E, had to pee in a bottle once while driving at 70 miles an hour - but that's not the point of this article. The point is that this evening, two renowned poets who make up Broken Word, Big Poppa E and Matthew John Conley, will be performing at UNM while on the Busted Tooth tour.

Capoeira a stunning art form

Handstand, back-flip, jump, kick, headstand - the human body is an amazing vessel, capable of almost anything. At first glance, Capoeira seems like a martial art-based method of self-defense. An abundance of movements incorporated in Capoeira are grounded in martial arts, such as controlled kicks and front and back-flips executed slowly and precisely.

COLUMN: Hip-Hop loses admirable icon

by Stanley Crouch Knight Ridder-Tribune If the murder of Jason Mizell, known as Jam Master Jay, is connected at all to the world of hip-hop, then things have gotten even worse than they already were. It is extremely bad news if hip-hop is at the point where even apparently good guys like Mizell - family men who speak out against thuggish behavior and drugs - can find themselves targets for goons in ski masks.
