Advertising Indecency?

by Ryan Floersheim Daily Lobo Campus groups organized a forum Wednesday addressing advertising ethics, sex and alcohol, women's portrayal in the mass media and the New Mexico Daily Lobo and their possible negative impact on students. The event, "Broken Bottles and Broken Bodies; A Forum on Alcohol, Violence and Advertisements on Campus," addressed a series of ads run in the Lobo that several campus groups have objected to due to their implied connection between sex and alcohol.

LETTER: Bush memorial visit simply hypocritical

Editor, I hope the irony of Bush's visit to the Vietnam War Memorial on Monday was not lost. This from a man whose family connections let him enlist in the Texas Air National Guard ahead of an 18-month waiting list of those hoping to avoid the war. This from a man who then honored this commitment by simply not showing up, like it was a summer job, and was never prosecuted for being AWOL.

by Marisa Demarco Daily Lobo Eirik Ott, a.k.a. Big Poppa E, had to pee in a bottle once while driving at 70 miles an hour - but that's not the point of this article. The point is that this evening, two renowned poets who make up Broken Word, Big Poppa E and Matthew John Conley, will be performing at UNM while on the Busted Tooth tour.

COLUMN: Hip-Hop loses admirable icon

by Stanley Crouch Knight Ridder-Tribune If the murder of Jason Mizell, known as Jam Master Jay, is connected at all to the world of hip-hop, then things have gotten even worse than they already were. It is extremely bad news if hip-hop is at the point where even apparently good guys like Mizell - family men who speak out against thuggish behavior and drugs - can find themselves targets for goons in ski masks.

Criteria for presidential applicants finalized

The Presidential Search Committee hammered out the final details Tuesday for the criteria for applicants for the UNM president position, including adding a new introduction to market the University's potential. LETTER: Column assassinates language

Editor, Three cheers for Eric Howerton! I salute him for the language expert and razor-sharp satirist that he is. In his Nov. 1 column, his modest proposal for restoring "appreciation" to the language of Shakespeare, Eliot, and Seinfeld neatly skewers many myths about language perpetrated by so-called "language mavens" and associated blowhards.

Directing a distinct challenge

by Amber L. Earls Daily Lobo What can I say about directing "Garage" in Words Afire? Well, it's crazy, but very rewarding - especially when you have very talented people to work with. "Garage," written by Heidi Griffin, is a short one-act play about how parental abandonment affects two sisters, Sarah and Molly, by strengthening their sisterly bond and forcing them to grow up.

Foo Fighters' One By One has dark yet well-rounded sound

by Kenn Rodriguez Daily Lobo It would've been understandable if Dave Grohl had closed shop on the Foo Fighters after the band's last record, There Is Nothing Left to Lose. What else was there to accomplish? He'd already beaten long odds by hitting big with his first record, Foo Fighters.
