Former presidents welcomed back

by Kayla Anderson Daily Lobo Who can "swim like a fish, but doesn't need to because he can walk on water?" William Davis, UNM's 11th president, said the answer is the future leader of the University. Six former UNM presidents were welcomed back to campus yesterday at Zimmerman Library in an event to discuss UNM's history of leadership and the qualities that the University's future presidents should possess.

Program's accreditation makes committee agenda

The recent loss of the journalism department's accreditation became a major topic of discussion at the Board of Regents' Academic/Student Affairs Committee meeting Tuesday. The committee also listened to presentations about the pros and cons of retirement-age employees and efforts being made to prevent students from dropping out.

Women's team prepares for regional championships

Engineering Department mourns student's death

by Clay Holtzman Daily Lobo On a Tuesday that had been proclaimed "Civil Engineers Day," the UNM engineering community was left in shock by the news that one of its brightest and most promising students was killed in a car crash Monday. Joseph Roybal, 23, a senior civil engineering major at the School of Engineering, was killed early Monday when the vehicle he was traveling in swerved off a snow-covered I-40 and rolled over at least two times, Lt.

Student Resident Center polls not popular this year

by April Hale Daily Lobo The ballot was long, but lines at the election polls in the Student Residence Center were not. Despite the lack of a large student turnout, many said voting is vital. "Voting is necessary if you want to live in a democracy," said political science major William Wiekart.

LETTER: Accreditation loss appalling to grad

Editor, As a product of the UNM Journalism program and rookie reporter, I was appalled and sorely disappointed to find out that Dr. Hall decided to kill the program. I for one, feel well prepared for the real world of reporting, due in large part to my experiences at the Daily Lobo and instructors like Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez, Steve Brown and Bob Gassaway.

Psi Chi honors psychology students

by Jeff Proctor Daily Lobo Fifty-four students were inducted Monday night into the UNM chapter of Psi Chi, the National Honors Society in Psychology, at the Continuing Education Building. "The ceremony gives us a chance to recognize students excelling in psychology here at UNM," said Crystal Aragon, who was recently elected president of the UNM chapter of Psi Chi.

Manager expedites SUB construction

Roger Lujan, director of facilities and planning, said Monday that a new construction manager from the UNM Physical Plant will monitor the SUB construction to speed the process along. Lujan, who spoke at a Board of Regents' Finance and Facilities Committee meeting, said that with the new manager, a new step is being made in keeping the already much-delayed Student Union Building on task.
