Athletes of the week

Senior Jordan Adams of the women's basketball team and Ricky Francis of the men's soccer team are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Adams led the team in scoring with 21 points in UNM's 55-48 loss to the University of Southern California.

Fumbled away

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Just eight points separated the UNM football team from a possible Mountain West Conference title and hopes of a Liberty Bowl bid Saturday night. The Lobos beat the Colorado State Rams in almost every statistical category except where it mattered the most -- the scoreboard.

Lobos strong at start, but fade in 76-68 loss to Cal

by Tony Niklinski Daily Lobo The UNM men's basketball team came up empty-handed Friday night at The Pit, as the Lobos were defeated by the University of California 76-68. The California Bears are a solid Pac-10 team, year in and year out. During last year's NCAA Tournament, the Bears went as far the second round before being eliminated by the University of Pittsburgh.

Law School wing gets name

by Ryan Floersheim Daily Lobo One of UNM's most accomplished professors will be honored today for his contributions to the School of Law by having a new wing of the school named after him in a ceremony. Former School of Law Dean Frederick Hart, best known for his efforts in starting the summer pre-law program for American Indian law students and the American Indian Law Center, Inc.

First game true test for Lobos

People didn't think highly of our team because of some unfamiliar faces. The exhibition games are used to help tighten a team's offense and defense as well as team unity.

Pueblo professor receives award

by Jeff Proctor Daily Lobo Joseph Suina, associate professor of the UNM College of Education, received this month's Faculty Acknowledgement Award for his service and commitment to the education of teachers from multi-ethnic backgrounds. In his award ceremony presentation Thursday at the Willard Reading Room in Zimmerman Library, "Conflict, Confusion and Astonishment," Suina talked about his teaching experiences both at UNM and in his native Cochiti Pueblo.

This year's campus auto thefts lowest in four years

by Audra Meiklejohn Daily Lobo Only four years ago UNM reported more automobile thefts than any other university in the nation. Although the number of reported automobile thefts this year is less than half of the 1998 total, auto theft is still a prominent issue the campus police force is addressing.

Islam convert talks about stereotypes

A former Christian preacher described his conversion from Christianity to Islam and the often-stereotypical portrayal of Muslims in the media Thursday night to about 250 people at Woodward Hall Thursday night. Shiekh Yousef Estes spoke about the need for truth and understanding in the 21st century, while broadcasting his program "Islam Tomorrow," via the Internet, from UNM's Woodward Hall Thursday night.
