Redondo Drive still closed off

UNM students will have to endure the closure of Redondo Drive at the crosswalk north of the UNM Bookstore for a few more weeks after a broken water pipe caused a slight delay in construction. The utility trench work was delayed during the semester break when a 10-inch water pipe was broken Jan.

'Unit 7' about music, not fame

by Abel Horwitz Daily Lobo Albuquerque audience members are some of the lucky ones as talented independent bands like Unit 7 Drain are allowed to grow and evolve. Unit 7 Drain strives for originality. Lead singer/guitarist Harry Redus-Brown said that the band "is mostly about suppressed aggression, agitation, dissatisfaction and a sort of general disaffected feeling of most people who are intelligent enough to perceive what's going on around them.

Radio talk show gets award for voicing drug issue opinions

Staff Report A debate taped at UNM for National Public Radio between Drug Enforcement chief Asa Hutchinson and former Gov. Gary Johnson won first place in the Nancy Dickerson Whitehead awards for excellence in reporting this year. The debate, which took place in September and was taped before 600 people, was titled Directing America's Drug War: Which way to a Safer Society? as part of the NPR show Justice Talking.

Caught on the cutting edge

The Tricklock Company will spnosor its third annual Revolutions International Theatre Festival. Theater companies from six different countries will present more than 35 performances for 20 days at eight venues throughout the city.

UNM ready for MWC

Don Flanagan, head coach of the UNM women's basketball team, said he considered Saturday's match-up against Weber State University to be a warm-up for Mountain West Conference play. If the Lobos' 70-57 win was a mere warm-up, then expect center Jordan Adams to be a force in the MWC this season.

Lobos struggle during winter break

The UNM men's basketball team starts the Mountain West Conference portion of its schedule tonight at 10 p.m., with a ESPN Big Monday match-up against Colorado State University. The Rams are not favorites to win the MWC title this year, but they could still prove to be a challenge to a Lobo team that has struggled during winter break.

Football players' fake IDs found

LETTER: 'Two Towers' movie pro-war hype strange

Editor, Recently, there has been some strange construction of the J.R.R. Tolkien classic trilogy The Lord of the Rings as being racist and pro-war propaganda, with some trying to link the title of the second part of the story The Two Towers as being a comparison to the twin towers and the fact that the Orcs, the animal-like villains in service of the evil Sauron are dark complected, therefore the story is racist.

Campus museum robbed of valued San Ildefonso art

Staff Report UNMPD detectives are investigating a daytime burglary at the Maxwell Museum that netted three items estimated to be worth $1,500. The burglary occurred Dec. 4, between 12:30 p.m. and 3:45, when a male entered the museum, walked around the gift shop and then pried and broke the glass of a display case to get to the items inside.

Swim team sweeps pair of meets

Staff Report The UNM swimming and diving team opened 2003 with two dominating wins over the University of Houston and the Air Force Academy this weekend to raise their records to 7-1 overall and 4-2 in the Mountain West Conference. Friday, the Lobos easily handled Houston, downing the Cougars 142-101.

New Year's Eve is my friend's birthday and it was the night Roberto Clemente disappeared forever. I found myself thinking about the link after the fact. Clemente, who is my favorite baseball player and the first Latino major leaguer to put Hispanics on the map in the MLB, was Puerto Rican.

Lewis added to football staff

Staff Report UNM head coach Rocky Long announced Jan. 3 that he is replacing departed defensive coordinator Bronco Mendenhall with Osia Lewis. Mendelhall left the Lobos' staff last month to take the defensive coordinator post at Brigham Young University.

Giving spirit dooms Lobos in Vegas Bowl

LAS VEGAS - The UNM football team came into the 2002 Las Vegas Bowl wanting to make history by winning its first bowl game in 41 years. The Lobos had to settle for breaking the Division-I gender barrier and giving the University of California at Los Angeles a game before falling to the Bruins 27-13.
