LETTER: Park column lacks empathy for poor

Editor, Eric Howerton's article "Police useless in Roosevelt" left me saddened over his obvious lack of empathy for homeless people. Is valuing a free game of Frisbee golf over the safety, health and well being of Albuquerque citizens the way UNM affiliates want to be portrayed? I, for one, do not.

MLK Jr.'s life, dream celebrated

Vercye Thompson, an Albuquerque community member, said Friday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Service in the Alumni Chapel that America is still plagued by racism, unwilling to act because people's situations are "comfortable." Thompson said that though countless people lost their lives in the fight for King's dream -- a dream of equality, where people would be judged on character and not the color of their skin -- she is baffled why people are willing to let racism go by simply because things are better than they were 30 years ago.

Mr. Howerton explains that, instead of sand traps and other obstacles found at the average golf course, the Frisbee golf course at Roosevelt is plagued with homeless people, drug dealers who sell crack to elementary school children and rabid, leash-less dogs.

EDITORIAL: Loss of journalist big blow to UNM

The world just lost a great human being. The University lost a great teacher; the country lost one of its greatest journalists; the Daily Lobo and alumni of the student paper lost a great writing coach; and the community lost a valuable member when Henry Trewhitt died yesterday.
