COLUMN: Bush's energy policy lacks urgency

KRT Campus Media Call it retro-futuristic. President Bush's energy policy draws on the past and looks to the future, but skips the present entirely. In the State of the Union, the president called on Congress to pass his "comprehensive" energy package, which heavily subsidizes yesterday's technology -- coal, oil and nuclear power.

Douglas continues hot shooting as Lobos fall

Staff Report The UNM men's basketball team dropped to last place in the Mountain West Conference after a 80-64 loss to Brigham Young University on Saturday. The loss marked the Lobos 13th consecutive road loss dating back to last year. It is the longest such streak since they dropped 14 in a row during the 1981-82 season.

Lobo baseball regroups for year's first win

Staff Report The UNM baseball team shook off consecutive losses to start the season and beat Texas Tech University 9-6 Sunday in Lubbock, Texas. The Lobos' bats woke up from a weekend slumber while pounding out 11 hits. UNM (1-2) banged TTU starter Nathan Fouts for five runs including a solo home run by Dusty Young in the third inning and two-run dinger from Jeff Grady in the seventh.

On the Verge with Cheech Marin

Actor Cheech Marin said he chose the words very carefully when selecting a title for the exhibition of his private collection of Chicano Art. "Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge" is also a book featuring Marin's compilation of prominent Chicano artists.

Ice Wolves keep pace with favored Buffs

The UNM Ice Wolves played perhaps their most inspired game of the year holding heavily favored University of Colorado Buffaloes to a 3-3 tie Saturday after losing 8-2 on Friday. Welcoming the touted Buffaloes this weekend to the Outpost Ice Arena, the Ice Wolves looked to get a solid home start in the 2003 season.

LETTER: UNM staff salaries also cut unacceptably

Editor, In response to UNM President Garcia's comments reported in the Daily Lobo Jan. 29, 2003, that UNM faculty took a pay cut in the last year and that this was not acceptable to the University, what is also not acceptable is that UNM staff took a pay cut as well.

Lobos overthrow Rebels at The Pit

by Audra Meiklejohn Daily Lobo Senior Chelsea Grear led UNM to an emotional 65-60 win over the UNLV Rebels in front of a sold-out arena Saturday. A total of 18,018 fans were in attendance at The Pit -- the largest audience for a Division I women's game this season.

Director to receive award for method to fight addiction

Robert J. Meyers will receive the 2002 Dan Anderson Research Award from the Hazelden Foundation this May for his positive reinforcement-based method of motivating chemically dependent people to seek treatment. As associate director of the Clinical Research Branch of the UNM Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addiction, also known as CASAA, Meyers has dedicated his life to helping people battle addiction.

Not all advisers qualified

UNM undergraduate students can take comfort that they are receiving the best advisement possible, although in some instances a loophole is allowing advisers to practice without meeting the minimum requirements of the job. According to the Human Resource Department's Web site, an undergraduate adviser at UNM must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a related field or discipline to the department they are advising and six months to one year of work experience.

LETTER: Lobo balances war discourse

Editor, I find it amazing the Lobo would print something as awful as A. Slayton's opinion letter Jan. 31, but I realize that's your job as good journalists in a free society. Her concept of public censorship flies in the face of one of the reasons, in her words; it is "a privilege to be an American.

Editor, I find it amazing that you can print something as awful as the opinion letter about the war in Wednesday's paper. I understand that it is just an opinion but anti-American opinions like that should not be given such publication. Whether or not people agree with who the president is or his decisions are their own opinions.

Football player investigated for fake ID scandal

UNM football player Quincy Wright is being investigated by the University for allegedly using his home computer to make nine fake Oklahoma drivers licenses for other players. The case is also being reviewed by the district attorney's office. Copies of the nine licenses were found at a local Kinko's in December.
