Audioslave perfect blend of new rock

The voice of Soundgarden, the power of Rage Against the Machine -- Audioslave is here. One of the most anticipated musical projects of all time has finally arrived and, yes, it was worth the wait. With legendary ex-Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell and the seminal Rage Against the Machine trio, bassist Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk on percussion and guitarist Tom Morello backing him up, Audioslave is, in short, amazing.

Vortex play stellar

If I had to choose one word to sum up "Bosoms and Neglect," the new play at the Vortex, that word would be: brilliant. A stellar small cast plus an intimate setting made for an altogether entertaining and engaging night at the theater, which is usually one of my least favorite places to be.

Fellowship awarded to Navajo staff member

Staff Report A UNM American Indian program staff member has been awarded a post-doctoral fellowship from the American Educational Research Association to study the influence of institutional education on American Indian communities. Beginning this August, Tiffany Lee, who is of Navajo/Lakota descent, will engage in two to three years of research on "Educational influences on the development of Native American identity and communities," in collaboration with mentor Greg Cajete, associate professor of education at UNM and Native American Studies director.

Athletes of the Week

Freshman forward David Chiotti of the men's basketball team and freshman Kathrin Spendier of the Alpine ski team are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Chiotti played a vital role in the Lobos win over Air Force Saturday, leading the game in rebounds, with seven.

Saturday night, outside The Pit, a blistering snowstorm ripped through the Land of Enchantment. Inside, Ruben Douglas and the hot-shooting Lobos blistered through the Air Force Academy to a 73-59 victory. In the battle to stay out of the Mountain West cellar, the Lobos (8-12, 2-5 MWC) jumped on Air Force early and often en route to a 17-point halftime lead.

Lobos shoot down Cowboys

It was a bitterly cold day on Sunday afternoon, but the UNM baseball team's bats were blazing hot while defeating New Mexico Highlands 28-3. The Lobos scored at will and provided no mercy for their instate rivals from Las Vegas, N.M. UNM scored early and often while demolishing the Cowboy's pitching staff.

Most people know that hemp can be a tree alternative for paper products. But, most people probably don't know that the government has explored nearly 500 alternatives to trees. Representatives from one local business said that kenaf, the alternative they use, is the best on the market for saving trees.

American doctor details Iraq visit

Local doctor Kathleen O'Malley doesn't care that it is illegal to travel to Iraq and she doesn't care that traveling there means risking death. However, what she does care about is that people are suffering in Iraq due to U.S. sanctions; she cares so much that, despite all of this, she traveled there Jan.

LETTER: Chicano Studies lacking funds

Editor, I am writing to inform you and the readers what is going on with the Chicano Studies program. The program is one of the poorest funded and supported programs at UNM. Chicano Studies barely survives on a $100,000 yearly budget and a generous donation of $100,000 (which unfortunately might not be available next year) from Dr.

LETTER: Chicano Studies in danger of expiring

Editor, I commend those students that came out Thursday, in protest of Dean White's and University College's mishandling of Chicano Studies. As I myself witnessed a poorly attended public presentation by the one and only candidate for the position of director of Chicano Studies and, more recently, a well-attended student demonstration at Chicano Studies, I thought it would be appropriate to share with the entire UNM community the same concerns I have already expressed to Peter White, the dean of University College, and to the steering committee.

Women's basketball loses late lead, defeated by Utah

Staff Report The Lobos suffered a heartbreaking loss Saturday, falling in overtime to Mountain West leader Utah University 64-61, in Salt Lake City. After overcoming a 10-point deficit at the half, the Lobos (13-7, 3-4 MWC) held the advantage for most of the second period, but ultimately lost due to clutch 3-point shooting by the Utes.
