Pit rocks as Lobos upset favored Utes

The Lobos proved that anything is possible by defeating the University of Utah 76-69 Saturday at The Pit. The Utes (21-5, 9-2 MWC) came into the contest riding a red-hot, nine-game winning streak. The Lobos (10-15, 4-8 MWC), on the other hand, were coming off two tough road losses at San Diego State and UNLV.

Students can tip hats to teachers

Staff Report Staff, faculty, students and alumni have a chance to reward their favorite teachers for enhancing their college education and the overall community at UNM. The deadline for applications for the 2002-03 Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award, the Adjunct Faculty and Lecturer Teaching Award and the 2002-2003 Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award is March 5.

Lobos come back to beat Falcons

The UNM baseball team overcame a slew of obstacles to emerge victorious in 13 innings against the Air Force Academy at Lobo Field Friday. Bad weather, darkness and a six-run Falcon lead going into the eighth inning was not enough to defeat the Lobos. Friday’s match up started out strong for UNM as junior right-hander James Vermilyea struck out the first five Air Force batters he faced.

Police give bike thefts low priority

UNM police are assigning low priority to a rash of thefts that left four people wondering who stole their bikes within less than a 30-hour period. According to police reports and victim statements, the thefts all occurred between 6:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb.

Alcohol-related death numbers see big drop

Staff Report Alcohol-related motor vehicle fatalities in New Mexico during the first eight weeks of this year have dropped compared to the same period in 2002, according to statistics released by New Mexico Highway’s Safety Bureau. There were 36 alcohol-related deaths in the first eight weeks of last year, while there were 19 alcohol-related fatalities reported from Jan.

Ski team drops to 4th after lackluster showing

Staff Report The Lobo ski team brought home fourth-place honors from its regional meet Monday in Winter Park, Colo. UNM entered the West Regional Championships in a seemingly secure third place, but the University of Denver rallied on its home slopes, to finish on top of the Lobos, 542-439.

Museum gets new air system

by Keri Burson Daily Lobo After being closed for nine months, UNM's Art Museum re-opened its doors earlier this month after finishing extensive renovations on its environmental control system, display areas and storage facilities. The new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system will control the museum's humidity and temperature levels and filter out the air's harmful dust particles.

Santa Fe passes 7-1 vote to raise minimum wage

by Justin Gonzalez Daily Lobo The Santa Fe City Council took an unprecedented first step toward a $10.50 minimum wage within the city Thursday. The controversial "living wage" ordinance, which passed by a 7-1 vote, means that starting Jan. 1, 2004, private sector employers in Santa Fe must pay employees a minimum of $8.

Track team races for top spot

by Todd Burns Daily Lobo The UNM track team will compete in the Mountain West Conference indoor track meet in Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend. The race for the No. 1 track team in the MWC began on Thursday with the men and women's pentathlon.

Maria Griego-Raby says her business career has led her in many directions, the latest being an appointment to the UNM Board of Regents. "The University is critical," Griego-Raby said. "Hopefully, I have something to offer from my business background as well as from a community perspective.

Staff Report The UNM baseball team kicks off conference play today against the Air Force Academy at Lobo Field. The Lobos (7-6) won two out of four games last week, splitting a pair of games with New Mexico State University and Portland State University.

Media ads scrutinized in lecture

Bob McCannon is not happy with most advertising messages presented in American mass media, including the Daily Lobo. McCannon, the executive director of the New Mexico Media Literacy Project, said that if anyone wants an example of how media demeans women, they should take a look at the campus newspaper.

New regent says he can tackle issues creatively

Donald H. Salazar says that he would like to serve the UNM Board of Regents with distinction and wants to be known as a hard-working public servant. Salazar, who has been a practicing attorney in the private sector for more than 30 years, said that he believed he was chosen as regent because the governor has confidence in his abilities.

UNM's School of Engineering was one of 27 colleges to participate in a recent gender-equity conference at the National Academy of Engineering that was designed to highlight cutting edge research and accelerate gender equity in university settings. The conference, "Leveraging Experience to Accelerate Progress: Moving Towards Gender Equity in Engineering Education," in Washington, D.

Most people have become so habituated to seeing commercials that media advertisements are viewed uncritically regardless of content. However, a recent series of anti-marijuana propaganda ads begs analysis. The portrayal of drug use in the commercials paid for by the White House Office of National Drug Policy show the "reality" behind drug use.
