Grant given to literacy program

The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded the UNM Center for Family and Community Partnerships in the College of Education a $2.3 million grant to begin local efforts to improve language and reading skills in young children, called Project LEER. Project LEER, an acronym for Learners Eager for Early Reading, which is also Spanish for "to read," is an Early Reading First Program.

Workers from Silver Construction Company of New Mexico, Inc. have been given seven days to leave campus after their contract to build the new SUB was terminated by University administrators Thursday.

Students get to see real life situations at Winter X-Games

The director of the Athletic Training Education program works double time as the director of sports medicine for ESPN, a job she uses to bring exposure to UNM and provide many of her students with hands-on education. Susan McGowen, who has worked for the Entertainment Sports Programming Network for nine years, has headed medical teams providing assistance for sporting events across the world, including the Winter, Summer and International X-Games and the Global-X Championship.

LETTER: UNM music unethical

Editor, I read with dismay, but not surprise, about the theft of two bassoons from the UNM Music Department valued at $14,000. (See Daily Lobo News in Brief, Feb. 18.) The problem for the Music Department is not one of instrument theft but one of professional ethics.

Ski team prepares for meet

After an impressive first-place finish in Crested Butte two weeks ago, the UNM ski team heads back to Colorado for the NCAA West Regional meet this Sunday and Monday in Winter Park, Colo. The Lobos are seated third overall going into regionals, following Utah and Colorado respectively.

Lobos lasso in Cowgirls

The Lobos got sweet revenge in defeating the University of Wyoming Cowgirls, 70-37, Monday night, at The Pit. UNM lost to Wyoming 71-58 earlier in the year, but it made sure that there would be no repeat of that this time around. The Lobos (15-7, 5-4 MWC) played penny-pinching defense in forcing the Cowgirls (15-8, 5-5 MWC) to miss their first 11 shots of the game en route to a commanding 33-6 lead well into the first half.

Delacour ahead of Venezuelan game

UNM alumnus Justin Delacour has gathered some international publicity lately by questioning the practices of Venezuela's best-known polling companies. In an online report, "Can You Believe Venezuela's Pollsters?" Delacour accuses Venezuela's largest polling firms of being against the country's president, Hugo Chavez.

New regents speak to ASUNM Senate

ASUNM senators exchanged suggestions and questions with two new members of the UNM Board of Regents concerning topics such as the presidential search, tuition increases and faculty and staff salary increases. Newly appointed Regs. James Koch and Donald Salazar were guest speakers at the Associated Students of UNM meeting, Wednesday, and took the opportunity to acclimate themselves with the senators’ concerns.
