Lobos need more than statistics

If you look at the box score from the UNM women's basketball team's victory over Mississippi State University, you won't find much mention of Tiffany Scaglione, Cristal Garcia or The Pit. What they bring to the table isn't measured by statistics. The two players and one arena scored two points, two points and zero points respectively.

Letter: Women's basketball great asset for UNM

Editor, A hearty congratulation is in order to the Lobos after their two victories in the NCAA tournament. Coach Flanagan and his staff have built a solid, well-respected program with many good student-athletes stepping up to contribute from both the past and present, too.

Flanagan tour de force for program

These days when people think of the Lobos they envision fiesty sophomore point guard Mandi Moore or the offensive grace and defensive dominance of Jordan Adams, or maybe they think of forward Chelsea Grear, who is always tearing down offensive rebounds over bigger opponents.

Letter; Lobo too negative in Greek coverage

Editor, For years now I have noticed a trend that the Daily Lobo practices. The trend is to print mainly negative stories about the Greek System. Yes, I have occasionally seen positive stories about the men and women in fraternities and sororities. I also understand that writing stories on community service, the high GPA of Greeks, or even campus involvement may be quite boring, but at least then a fair and true representation would show all aspects of Greek life.

COLUMN: Decisions need actual logic

by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist The Physical Plant Department is in the process of re-seeding Johnson Field on the east side of Johnson Gym. One of the requirements mandated by a federal bureaucracy dictated that we do an environmental impact report on the area being re-seeded so we don't negatively impact any endangered species or archaeological sites.

COLUMN: Gaining trust of Iraqis not easy

by Sean Misko Daily Collegian (Pennsylvania State U.) (U-WIRE) UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Far from the scripted “shock and awe” promised by military planners, the first official shots of the U.S.-led war with Iraq were brief and took many experts by surprise.

COLUMN: Media labels war protesters

by Jen Kosakowski Daily Targum (Rutgers U.) (U-WIRE) NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — It has become increasingly obvious to me in recent weeks that there has been a surge in writings that vilify and invalidate the anti-war activist. There has never been much tolerance for dissent in this nation, but the proliferation and escalation of such rhetoric and its attempts to disengage anti-war activists should be questioned.

Jucifer new brand of musical blends

The M.C. Hammer mentality that says a music group needs more than 10 members to succeed doesn't apply to the rock/metal/grunge duo Jucifer. In fact, the two, who are actually a married couple, do just fine on their own. Their new album I Name You Destroyer proves exactly that.

Fan loyalties silence artists' opinions

What is the artist's role in today's society, especially in the United States after Sept. 11 and now the war with Iraq? I don't know and it seems to me that many artists don't really know either. Art can be political, social, economical, environmental, personal or all of the above, but what can artists do in a time when nothing about the future is certain? While watching the 75th Annual Academy Awards, the most widely recognized awards ceremony on Earth, I was soon consumed by the thought of whether any of the artists being honored would speak out about the war, especially with the backlash that occurred after lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, spoke her mind about President Bush.
