Expert asseses U.S. role in Middle East

An expert on the traditions and history of the Middle East visited UNM Monday to lecture about the current crisis facing the region and the shifting role that the United States is playing in its fate. R. Stephen Humphreys, professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern history at the University of California at Santa Barbara, explained to a large crowd inside Dane Smith Hall that a book he wrote in 1998, Between Memory and Desire: The Middle East in a Troubled Age, meant to detail the current events of the region, would need an overhaul to be correct after Sept.

COLUMN: U.S. shows hypocrisy by disregarding rights

by Lenzy Krehbiel Daily O’Collegian (Oklahoma State U.) (U-WIRE) STILLWATER, Okla. — Over the past few decades, hypocrisy has become a standard in this country. LETTER: Question of fairness in countries’ jurisdictions

Editor, The question of fairness regarding Belgium’s right to prosecute Ariel Sharon for an alleged war crime 21 years ago in Lebanon is debatable for sure. The conduct of Ariel Sharon as Israeli Defense Minister 21 years ago in Lebanon is not. The practice of “universal jurisdiction” over war crimes or crimes against humanity is hardly limited to the “Maryland-sized country” of Belgium.

LETTER: Hidden motives in drug war

Editor, Truth to tell, the drug warrior politicians, officials, media and civilians secretly don’t list victory as an objective in their expensive and oppressive trillion-dollar war. When they do spout their “zero tolerance/total victory” rhetoric, how many of your readers actually believe them? How many actually believe that this year’s multibillion-dollar drug war budget will be the one that will achieve total victory after decades of billion dollar budgets have totally failed? Just remember that the drug czars’ and warriors’ jobs depend on the perpetual prosecution of, but never a victory in, the drug war.
